  • Publication number: 20070028566
Abstract: Described is a system having an improved nozzle device for reducing the volume of an already-sealed bag containing compressible hazardous waste without contaminating the nozzle device itself. The nozzle device is adapted to puncture and penetrate the bag and to cooperate with a vacuum device that draws most of the air within the bag through the nozzle device and into the vacuum device through suitable filters, thus decreasing the volume of the bag. A sheath cooperates with the nozzle device such that when the nozzle device has penetrated the bag, only the sheath member is exposed to the hazardous contents of the bag, the sheath member remaining in the bag after volume reduction, mitigating the release and spread of hazardous contaminants out of the bag.

  • Publication number: 20060144787
Abstract: An integrated treatment system using electrodialysis and pressure-driven membranes for deionizing and decontaminating liquids to a near-pure quality for use or reuse in industrial or municipal operations. The integrated system includes steps of pre-filtering contaminated feed liquids blending the filtered liquids in preparation for treating the mixed liquids in parallel or sequential treatment steps utilizing nanofiltration or reverse osmosis, proceeded by or followed by an integrated electrodialysis treatment. A control means selectively directs mixed liquids to each of the treatment units for treatment in parallel or in series depending on the conductivity and residual contaminants in the mixed liquids. In comparison with nanofiltration or reverse osmosis only systems, or electrodialysis only systems, the integrated system provides improved efficiencies for treatment, requires less energy to operate, and reduces maintenance and capital costs.

  • Publication number: 20050150768
Abstract: An electrodialysis method and apparatus include a source of concentrate fluid, a source of dilute fluid, a collector of treated concentrate fluid, a collector of dilute fluid, an anode and a cathode. A plurality of generally planar spacers are interleaved with a plurality of membranes to define a plurality of cells providing electrically conductive fluid connection between the anode and the cathode. Each of the spacers comprises a gasket that defines a first aperture and a second aperture. Each of said first and second apertures define an independent cell between interleaved membranes. The symmetrical, multiple split cell spacer configuration channels fluid flow through two or more narrow and elongated paths. The split cell arrangement allows for operation of the stack in parallel or in series.

  • Patent number: 5977528
Abstract: A rectangular microwave applicator for processing waste material. The rectangular microwave applicator generally includes an upper cavity and a waste container. The upper cavity defines side walls and a ceiling, the bottom of the upper cavity is open. A screwfeeder tube is positioned on and extends through one of the side walls, and a vent is positioned on and extends through another of the side walls. The waste container is rectangular in configuration and is receivable in the bottom of the upper cavity. The waste container holds waste material which is introduced therein via the screwfeeder tube. A microwave choke is carried across the bottom of the upper cavity and is configured to permit the entrance of the waste container in the bottom of the upper cavity. A microwave energy input is at each corner on top of the ceiling of upper cavity and extends therethrough.
