Abstract: An apparatus grinding a steel billet to remove surface cracks. The billet is advanced in the direction of it longitudinal axis while being rotated. The apparatus includes a grinding wheel mounted in a bearing in a movably mounted support member. In order to accurately and simply control the penetration depth of the grinding wheel, a stop member is mounted on the support member. In one embodiment, the stop member is a segment of a circle mounted eccentrically relative to the grinding wheel. In another embodiment, the stop member is a segment of a spiral mounted coaxially with the grinding wheel. The stop member engages the surface of the billet. Two arrangements are described for rotating the billet at an increased speed while grinding the edge regions.
Abstract: A one-piece open-ended water-cooled continuous casting mold and a method of making it to improve the service life of such mold made up from galvanically precipitated layers of which an inner layer consists of a wear-resistant metal such as nickel and an exterior layer is made particularly from copper. After the mold has been manufactured and while still on the core it may be further improved by application of external pressure.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for repairing slide plates of metallurgical containers. These types of slide plates consist of refractory material and have a passage opening for the discharge of the liquid metal, which is usually steel. Owing to corrosion and radial cracks, which orginate at the passage opening, these slide plates 5 become worn after a lengthy operating time. In order to be able to further use them to a large extent, the invention provides a bore, in the area of the opening, extending as far as the edge of the rim 6 of the slide plate, while the remaining refractory material is retained. Into this bore there is poured a refractory casting mass, the grain structure of which has a particular relation to the pore size of the retained refractory material. The essential fact is that the solid bodies of the refractory casting mass are predominantly smaller than the open pores, cut by means of the boring process, of the retained refractory material and can penetrate into the pores.
Abstract: A method of repairing an ingot mould for a steelworks which forms cracks, the method comprising applying a patch plate at both sides of the crack, a series of patch plates being provided in succession in the direction of the length of the crack, reinforcement strips curved to match the curvature of the mould wall being provided on the patch plates and being adjusted to positions transversely of the length of the crack and then fixed on the plates.
Abstract: A holding device for a manually portable drilling machine includes a detachable tension element which is attached at two mutually opposite points to a carrier member for the portable drilling machine, the tension element being sufficiently long to encircle at least the horizontal circumference of the object to be drilled at the vertical level of the hole to be drilled. In addition the device includes a resilient bracing means provided between the portable drilling machine and the tension element when the drilling machine is located at a drilling site and the tension element is secured to the carrier so as to be in tension around the object to be drilled.
Abstract: A method of securing a patch of resilient material to a surface, in which method the patch is applied to the surface so as to form a curved clearance between itself and the surface, pressure is applied to press the central region of the patch against the surface, and the edges of the patch are subsequently secured to the surface. Also provided is an apparatus for carrying out the method, which apparatus includes a fluid pressure ram and means for supporting this in relation to the surface to enable the pressure to be applied to the patch. Means are provided for securing the terminal portions of the patch to the surface during application of pressure by the ram.
