  • Patent number: 4560906
Abstract: A lighting system having a high pressure gas discharge light source and an incandescent light source within a common sealed and evacuated bulb. A ballast unit fitted externally to the neck of the bulb includes in series with the incandescent light source an interrupter element and control circuitry therefor, and a choke coil in series with the gas discharge light source. The control circuitry represents an equivalence logic with two variables, wherein the output terminal of an equivalence circuit is connected to the control input of the interrupter element while its input terminal is connected to a voltage divider system connected across the gas discharge light source. The output terminal is energized only if either both or neither of the input terminals of the equivalence circuit are energized. The interrupter element is closed when the output terminal of the equivalence circuit is energized.

  • Patent number: 4546290
Abstract: A high frequency ballast circuit for a discharge lamp particularly of the so-called energy saving type adapted to fit into conventional incandescent lamp sockets. The circuit comprises an inductive choke and a transistor switching device connected in series with the lamp and a rectified source of AC supply. The transistor is switched with a high frequency, preferably asymmetrically square, waveform and a diode having a direction of conduction opposite to that of the transistor is connected in shunt across the series-connected choke and lamp. The circuit enables lightweight air core coils to be used for the inductive choke facilitating integral combination of the circuit and discharge lamp into a lamp unit having the same general configuration as a conventional incandescent lamp.

  • Patent number: 4459509
Abstract: A tubular discharge vessel for high pressure sodium vapor lamps has a wall 1 made of light-transmitting material. The tube 1 is hermetically sealed at each end by a respective ceramic stopper 2 through which is passed a respective current lead-in wire 11. An electrode 8 is joined via a shank 10 to the current lead-in wire 11. The interior of the tube is filled with noble gas(es) and metal additive(s), e.g. sodium, mercury and/or cadmium. A cavity 9, preferably of rotationally symmetrical shape is formed in at least one of the stoppers 2. In operation of the discharge tube the cavity 9 is the cold spot. i.e. the internal wall of the lowest temperature. The volume of the cavity 9 is at least equal to the volume of the metal additives in their liquid phase.

  • Patent number: 4421803
Abstract: An improved glass envelope for electric light sources is described comprising an outer glass body and a thin glass matrix solidly attached to the glass body and comprising pigment grains fully embedded in the glass matrix. A precursor solution is formed from an organic solvent and a metalorganic and/or inorganic composition suitable for forming a glass having a softening point lower than that of the glass body. The surfaces of pigment grains are coated with the precursor solution and the solvent is evaporated from the pigment grains for obtaining pigment grains covered with a glass layer. The surface of the glass body is covered with the coated pigment grains and then baked at a temperature below the softening point of the glass body. The resulting glass envelopes have decreased light absorption and provide for higher light efficiency and extend life times of the electric light sources.

  • Patent number: 4342937
Abstract: The invention relates to a metal halogen vapor lamp with a discharge tube coated on surfaces adjacent to its electrodes with a heat reflecting layer. The discharge space comprising a discharge tube is made of a material which is permeable to light, preferrably quartz. The discharge space is between electrodes having a high melting point. An arc discharge takes place in the discharge space between the electrodes. The discharge space contains a metal of high vapor pressure at operational temperatures, a noble gas and, as additives, at least one metal and a halogen which forms a halogen compound with said metal. There is a heat reflecting layer with advantageous properties at one or both ends of the discharge tube of a material of high melting point, preferably quartz. The characteristics of said layer differ in many respects from the properties of previously known heat reflecting layers since it is bound to the surface of the quartz discharge tube by an inorganic binding material.

  • Patent number: 4329614
Abstract: An electric light source for use in a vehicle headlight unit capable of emitting dipped light beams, especially a sealed-beam headlight unit. The light source has a single filament or two-filament halogen lamp and an inner or outer screen element preventing the incidence of light from the dipping filament on the reflector. The shape of the rim of the screen element is a specially developed three-dimensional curve, whereby a distribution of the projected light is achieved which does not blind the drivers of oncoming vehicles. The shape of the three-dimensional curve forming the rim of the screen element can be determined point-by-point from the light distribution required, taking into consideration prescribed geometrical interrelations.
