Abstract: A vacuum cleaner with a vacuum unit and a wand assembly. The vacuum unit has a vacuum unit inlet. The wand assembly has a rigid portion and a flexible portion. The rigid portion has proximal and distal wand ends, and is reconfigurable between a condition in which the proximal wand end is rigidly connected to the vacuum unit inlet, and a condition in which the proximal wand end is movable relative to the vacuum unit inlet. The flexible portion has a proximal hose end to connect to the vacuum unit inlet, a distal hose end configured to fit inside the rigid portion, and a flexible hose between the hose ends. The hose is movable between a condition in which the hose is entirely inside the rigid portion, and a condition in which at least a portion of the hose adjacent the proximal hose end extends outside the rigid portion.

Also, provided is a utility port having a suction opening, a door to selectively cover the suction opening, a latch to selectively lock the door closed, a floating plate movably mounted on the door, and a seal between the floating plate and the suction opening. Also, provided is a method for operating a utility port door on a vacuum cleaner suction chamber, the method including pushing the utility port door a first time to close the door, and pushing the utility port door a second time to open the door.

The base plate has a lower surface configured to lie on a surface to be cleaned, and extends in a plane defined by a lateral direction and a longitudinal direction that is perpendicular to the lateral direction. The base plate is elongated in the lateral direction and includes a rigid central region that is connected to the handle, a flexing region, and a stepping region. The flexing region is made with an elastomeric material, and is connected at an inboard edge to a lateral end of the central region and extends to an outboard edge. The stepping region is connected to the outboard edge of the flexing region, and includes a generally flat upper surface configured to be stepped on by a user's foot.

The base has a bottom face, left and right side regions, an opening between the left and right side regions, and a resiliently-deformable crossbeam extending across the opening. The handle is at least partially in the opening and pivotally mounted to the base. The handle is rotatable, relative to the base, between upright and reclined positions. A protrusion extends from the handle and rotates through an arc that intersects the crossbeam. The protrusion contacts one side of the crossbeam when the handle is upright, and is on another side of and spaced from the crossbeam when the handle is reclined. The protrusion deforms the crossbeam when the protrusion is moved past the crossbeam. The cleaner also has a suction inlet on the base, a suction source, a dirt collector, and air passages connecting the suction inlet, suction source and dirt collector.

The first housing has an inlet, outlet and a suspension chamber in it. The suspension housing is at least partly in the suspension chamber, can move a predetermined distance along a suspension direction from a first position to a second position, and is restricted from moving perpendicular to the suspension direction. The suction motor is connected to and moves with the suspension housing. The springs are oriented to bias the suspension housing from the second position to the first position. A backpack vacuum cleaner having a suction motor in a movable suspension housing is also provided.

A fluid tank and a steam generator are operatively associated with the handle or the base. The steam generator receives fluid from the fluid tank and convert it into steam. A first control selectively operates the steam generator. The base has a bottom steam distributor on the bottom of the base and a side steam distributor on the sidewall or a top wall of the base. The bottom distributor distributes the steam towards a first region located within the outer perimeter of the base. The side distributor distributes the steam towards a second region located outside the outer perimeter of the base. A second control selects whether to distribute steam through the bottom or side distributor.

The inlet cover opening is offset from the impeller axis and faces at an upwards angle towards the upper end of the suction chamber.

The dirt container includes a receptacle, a ring mount extending from the receptacle sidewall near an open top of the receptacle and a release ring. The ring mount extends around the sidewall perimeter and a bottom of the ring mount is shaped to be held by an operator to support the dirt container. The release ring is movably mounted above the ring mount and extends around the sidewall perimeter. One or more locks are mounted between the ring mount and the release ring. The locks are movable by the release ring from an engaged position to hold the dirt container to the housing to a disengaged position to permit removal of the dirt container from the housing.

The handle has first and second valves to selectively receive suction airflow from a main suction inlet, a first edge cleaning inlet, and an accessory hose. The first valve is operable to connect a dirt separator to either a main floor cleaning inlet or an auxiliary cleaning inlet. The second valve is operable to selectively connect the auxiliary cleaning inlet to the edge cleaning inlet. The accessory hose is mountable to an accessory hose mount on the handle. When mounted, the accessory hose contacts a second actuator for the second valve to hold the second valve in an edge cleaning position.

Abstract: A vacuum cleaner suction head having a housing, one or more support to support the housing on a surface to be cleaned, a suction inlet and front and rear sealing plates. The front and rear sealing plates extend along the front and rear edges of the suction inlet, respectively. the sealing plates are movable between raised positions in which the lower surfaces of the plates are close to the housing, and lowered positions in which the lower surfaces of the plates are remote from the housing. The front and rear plates are movable from the lowered position to the raised position by contact with debris on the surface to be cleaned.
