  • Patent number: 5438505
Abstract: Adaptive control of converters is provided to achieve, in one case, a constant current characteristic by controlling input power as a function of the ratio of output voltage to output current. In another class of circuits, input current to the converter is controlled under an adaptive control arrangement in response to output voltage/output current ratios which may also be modified by input current or input voltage. The adaptive control may be augmented with low frequency negative feedback control loops.

  • Patent number: 5438238
Abstract: An improved ion source is provided with multiple filaments and wiring for selectively connecting various combinations of filaments to a current source. In one embodiment an additional filament is a spare filament which is connected to the current source when the primary filament burns out. This decreases down time due to filament replacement. In another embodiment, an additional filament operates simultaneously with a primary filament to provide a more homogenous electron cloud and to increase filament life.

  • Patent number: 5438646
Abstract: A Forward Feed Neural Network is disclosed using data flow techniques on a data flow microprocessor. As a result of this invention, a neural network is provided that has the capacity of "learning" to distinguish among patterns of data which may differ recognizably from idealized cases, and is able to perform pattern recognition faster while utilizing less memory and fewer clock cycles than neural networks implemented on sequential processors. This implementation is simpler and faster because of an inherent similarity between the flow of information in the brain and in data flow architecture.

  • Patent number: 5436668
Abstract: In a system for identifying specific horizontal lines of video that are included in a video signal, a horizontal line counter (100) is cleared to indicate the beginning of a vertical interval by a reset signal (VERDEL) derived from a vertical sync signal (VER). The line counter is clocked by a signal (HOR) at the horizontal sync rate that is derived from a harmonic (N.sub.-- FH) of the horizontal sync signal. The relative phase shift between the reset and clock signals for the horizontal line counter is measured (105,120). The measured phase shift is used as an input to a variable phase shifter (110) to adjust the phasing between the horizontal line counter control signals and the original sync signals. The phase adjustment permits significantly decreasing the sensitivity of the horizontal line counter to jitter of vertical sync.

  • Patent number: 5435760
Abstract: A self-seating backshell includes a backshell body, a coupling ring, and a spring. The backshell body has a first plurality of teeth. The coupling ring is mounted on the backshell body for coupling the backshell body to an electrical connector. The electrical connector has a second plurality of teeth. The first plurality of teeth are arranged to seat against the second plurality of teeth. A spring retains the coupling ring on the backshell body and biases the first plurality of teeth into seating engagement against the second plurality of teeth even though the first plurality of teeth initially are not properly seated against the second plurality of teeth.

  • Patent number: 5436667
Abstract: A television receiver embodying the invention includes a plurality of luminance signal sources, each capacitively coupled to an input of a luminance signal selection switch and each capacitor being coupled to a respective clamp circuit with each clamp circuit having a reference voltage input coupled to a common reference voltage source. A sync separator is provided having a first input coupled to receive the output of luminance signal selection switch and a second input coupled to a source of reference potential derived from said reference voltage source. Advantageously, the overall number of clamp circuits is minimized by merging the sync separator circuit with the input signal selection clamping circuit.

  • Patent number: 5432969
Abstract: A washing method and a washing apparatus capable of obtaining a washing or cleaning effect by mechanical energy obtained by cavitation phenomena or nonlinear oscillation of micro air bubbles generated during the resonance of a multi-phase medium using low frequency waves. The resonance phenomenon becomes accelerated and uniform by virtue of the injection of air bubbles in the tub or the provision of a sonic or ultrasonic oscillation unit, thereby enabling a superior washing performance to be obtained. Since the present invention eliminates use of any pulsator, it is possible to considerably reduce the phenomenon that clothes get twisted or tangled. As a result, few damage of clothes is generated. Moreover, the electric power consumption in washing or cleaning is greatly reduced.

  • Patent number: 5434926
Abstract: An automatic volume control to prevent the listener from having an odd sensation is obtained with a plurality of conditions taken into considerations. A plurality of control rules required to infer using fuzzy logic a volume correcting value on the basis of frequency band component levels, L, M and H and a volume level V are stored beforehand in a volume correcting value inferring portion 13. The volume correcting value inferring portion 13 obtains inference results of the individual control rules on the basis of the individual frequency band component levels L, M, H input from a filter circuit 12 and the volume level input from an audio reproducing portion 14, obtains a weighted mean of the respective inference results as a volume correcting value Z, and inputs the volume correcting value to the audio reproducing portion 14 to automatically correct the volume.

  • Patent number: 5434539
Abstract: Disclosed is a control circuit which provides a control signal to a control terminal of a voltage controlled amplifier (VCA), such as a SSM-2018 VCA manufactured by Analog Devices, such that a signal input to the VCA is amplified between full gain and full attenuation. The VCA is characterized by a predetermined control attenuation relationship which determines the gain of the input signal. The control circuit includes: a DC voltage source, preferably a linear potentiometer, which provides a voltage in a fixed range; an operational amplifier for rescaling the fixed range of voltages to a second range; a pair of curve-shaping circuits which adjust the second range; a scaling circuit, including an amplifier circuit, a voltage divider and a zener diode, which adapts the signal from the DC voltage source to a range of voltages calculated from the control attenuation relationship.

  • Patent number: 5431578
Abstract: An electrical connector system for providing low-loss, long-life electrical connection over many repeated coupling/uncoupling cycles. The connector utilizes ribbon contacts flexibly deformable in one axis to make electrical connection, substantially without sliding and compression friction during coupling and uncoupling. The connector comprises a receptacle and a plug, the plug housed within a shell. The plug is inserted almost fully into the receptacle before electrical or mechanical connection is made between corresponding contacts. A cam disposed in the shell flexes a contact mounting blade on the receptacle at the end of insertion, to bring the contact of the receptacle into electrical connection with the corresponding contact of the plug.
