Abstract: An improved multilayered circuit board material and process for making that material is disclosed. The material includes an insulating material support layer, an electrical resistance material layer adhering to the support layer, and a conductive material layer adhering to the resistance material layer and in intimate contact with that layer. The electrical resistance material layer comprises electroplated nickel-phosphorous containing up to about 30% by weight of phosphorous; however, no appreciable amounts of sulfur are present within at least the top about ten atomic layers of the electrical resistance material layer. As a result, the stability of the electrical resistance material layer is significantly increased. In addition, the electroplating bath does not contain chloride salts resulting in decreased pitting in the electrical resistance material layer.
Abstract: Bellows pump and actuating apparatus for automatically aspirating biological sample fluid material into and through an aspirating probe from a source of fluid sample material, into and through a sample segmenting valve for passage through a counting device. A plurality of bellows members, each having an axis of compression and expansion, has one end mounted on a fixed member. Timing and stroke members are provided for actuating movement of the other end of the bellows members, which are free to be moved parallel to their axis. A positioning member positions the timing and stroke members coaxially of the bellows members at preselected times. A drive member moves the timing and stroke members parallel to the axis of compression and expansion of the bellows members. Photo-optical indicating members, cooperating with the positioning member, interrupts the drive to the positioning member when the timing and stroke members are coaxially aligned with the bellows members.

Abstract: An HVAC system for a plurality of zones comprising an air handling unit including a blower, a plurality of heating stages and a plurality of cooling stages. The air handling unit is connected via ducts to each of the zones, each zone having an air outlet provided with a two-position damper which is either open or closed and a thermostat for providing an input signal to a microprocessor. The microprocessor has outputs for activating motors to move the dampers and outputs for activating the heating and cooling stages. The system includes an automatic mode of operation in which the microprocessor controls the number of stages of heating or cooling which are energized in dependence on the difference between the number of zone therostats calling for heating and the number of zone thermostats calling for cooling.
Abstract: A multi-function security system for monitoring access to a protected area such as a vehicle. The system has a self-diagnostic capability for detecting defective sensor or trigger devices and bypassing such devices to allow the system to be armed. The system includes audible and visual message capability for providing an indication when the system is disarmed that an intrusion was attempted and identifying the particular intrusion point. Multiple levels of security are provided by programming the disarming event as either entry of a code via a remote transmitter or entry of the code via the transmitter and then entry of an authorization code manually via a key pad.
Abstract: A telemetry receiver which is capable of automatically recognizing certain incompatible code formats and correctly decoding received data from a remotely located telemetry transmitter is disclosed. The specific embodiment is an end of train receiver mounted in the cab of a locomotive which receives encoded transmissions, including encoded brake pipe pressure data, a transmitter mounted on the last car of a train. The receiver permits telemetry equipment to be "mixed-and-matched"; that is, the receiver in the locomotive will respond to the transmissions of a telemetry transmitter attached to the last car of the train no matter what the vendor source. The telemetry receiver is provided with a microprocessor which analyzes the received transmission. The microprocessor is programmed to recognize certain known transmission protocols and formats and then invoke the correct routine for decoding the received data.

Abstract: A microcomputer-controlled thermostat for use in monitoring and controlling a single zone HVAC system which provides conditioned air to one or more zones. The thermostat can be programmed and used either as a monitor thermostat to control the HVAC unit alone and/or to control the HVAC unit and its damper in a multiple zone mode. The thermostat is also programmed as a slave thermostat in a master-slave relationship with a monitor thermostat. The microcomputer memory is supplemented with additional ROM containing control algorithms for use in system operation.
Abstract: A surface mount wirewound resistor having a conventional wirewound resistor embedded in a plastic body member with terminal axial leads of the resistor being severed at the opposite ends of the body member. A U-shaped metallic terminal pad or clip is secured to the ends of the body member and is in electrical contact with the severed ends of the axial leads. The upper and lower portions of the terminal pad are in coplanar relationship with the upper and lower surfaces of the body member. An alternate surface mount wirewound resistor has metallic tabs that extend from the resistance element embedded in the plastic body member, with the tabs being bent upwardly from the ends thereof and into coplanar relationship with the upper surface of the body member.
Abstract: A wireless optical short-range communication system adapted for use as an intercom system. The system can be used in fast food restaurants and similar commercial institutions. The communication system includes a base station to interconnect via optical communication a group of substantially similar physically spaced-apart, remote units. Each one of the remote units and the base units includes an optical emitter to transmit an optical message-carrying beam to the base station, and an optical receptor to receive an optical message-carrying beam from the base station. The base station includes a receptor for receiving the optical beam transmitted by the optical emitters of all of the remote units, and an optical emitter to relay the received optical beam to the optical receptors of all the remote units.
Abstract: A sonar fish finder system is provided for a boat for determining and displaying the location of fish in the body of water surrounding the boat. The system includes an electromechanical transducer assembly for transmitting sound waves in the body of water along separate paths in different directions into separate areas of the body of water, for receiving corresponding echoes from obstructions in the paths (including echoes from any fish in the paths) and for generating electrical signals in accordance with the received echoes. Electrical transmitters connected to the transducer assembly control transmission of the sound waves and receivers, connected to the transducer assembly, receive and process the electrical signals produced thereby.
Abstract: Piezopolymer actuator, wound in a bifilar fashion on two pins, is operated in a compressive mode without buckling. In addition to constraining motion of the winding along the surface of the pins, the pins also provide wide area electrical contacts with conductive electrodes on the surfaces of the piezopolymer strip. The electrodes consist of a thin film of metallization coated with graphite. Graphite coating heals microcracks in metallization, adds body to the piezopolymer strip, and lubricates winding-pin interfaces. Modular linear arrays of actuators are readily built from a single strip of piezopolymer. Linear array modules are in turn clamped together to form a two-dimensional array. Typical application is a tactile array for the blind.
Abstract: An improved railroad coupler mount (18) secures end of train signalling and monitoring equipment (40) to the coupler head (10) of the last car in a train. The coupler mount (18) is secured to the coupler head (10) by a banana shaped arm (20) which extends through relief holes (14a and 14b) in the guard arm side (12) of the coupler. A swivel toggle (22) positioned at the end of the arm (20) is pivoted to a perpendicular orientation relative to the arm (20) after it has been inserted through the relief holes (14a and 14b). A tightening screw (28) turned by knob (26) draws the arm (20) back out of the relief holes (14a and 14b) and causes the swivel toggle (22) to bear against the sidewall of the coupler head (10). A bulge (38) in the arm (20) is braced tightly against an inside wall of the coupler head (10) after tightening the arm (20).
Abstract: A toy which, during play, is rotated in a horizontal circular path about a player's ankle and automatically counts the number of successive rotations of the toy. The toy includes a collar, a drum interconnected to the collar, and a counter mechanism. The collar comfortably fits around an ankle region of a player. The drum is connected to the collar at a predetermined distance therefrom and engages a ground surface during play. During play, the drum is connected along a generally straight line to the collar in a manner imparting centrifugal rotation thereto while simultaneously permitting the drum to revolve about the straight line between the collar and drum. The counting mechanism automatically counts and provides a visual indication as to the number of successive rotations of the toy about the ankle of the player as a function of a predetermined number of drum revolutions.
Abstract: A vending machine is disclosed which is protected from theft or pilferage through an alarm device contained within the vending machine. The alarm device is mounted within the vending machine and sounds an alarm when the vending machine is moved or tilted more than a certain amount for a predetermined period of time. The alarm device is inexpensive, compact and easy to install requiring little modification to existing vending machines.
Abstract: A telephone headset is connected to a telephone line through a interface module having programmable signal conditioning characteristics. The interface module is universal in that it can be programmed for use with many different headset or handset units.
