The rigid back member is attached to the substantially planar lower surface of the shingle panel. the rigid back member includes a step in thickness in a cross-sectional plane perpendicular to the substantially planar lower surface and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the rigid back member. In addition, the thickness of the rigid back member at the high level of the step is greater than the thickness of the rigid back member at one of its ends. There is also provided an asphaltic adhesive including from about 62% to about 99% by weight of an asphalt cement; from about 0.5% to about 15% by weight of a first thermoplastic having a glass-transition temperature in the range from about 190° F.

    Abstract: There is provided a laminated roofing shingle having a first shingle sheet and a second shingle sheet. The first shingle sheet has a headlap section and a buttlap section, the buttlap section being about 7 inches or greater in height and including a plurality of tabs which are spaced apart to define one or more openings between the tabs. Each of the tabs has a relatively uniform color throughout the tab. The second shingle sheet is attached to the underside of the first shingle sheet and has portions exposed through the openings between the tabs. The second shingle sheet has at least first, second, third, and fourth horizontal striations thereon across at least partial portions of the second sheet which are exposed through the openings between the tabs. The first striation includes a first elongated quadrilateral area with a substantially uniform dark color throughout the first quadrilateral area. The second striation includes a second elongated quadrilateral area below the first striation.

    Abstract: A shingle having a headlap section and a buttlap section with at least one portion of the buttlap section having a relatively uniform color and another portion of the buttlap section having a color gradient or gradation from light to dark. An illusion of depth or thickness is created on the portion of the buttlap section having the color gradient. The buttlap section defines in part the exposed weather surface of the associated shingle. The relatively uniform color portions may be formed on tabs or dragon teeth and the color gradient formed on a backer sheet disposed beneath the tabs. Openings between adjacent tabs expose the color gradient to view. A plurality of horizontal striations may be used to establish the desired color gradient from light to dark. The amount of tone and contrast may be selected to create the desired illusion of depth or thickness. The amount of contrast may be varied depending upon the color selected for each shingle.

    Abstract: An approved roofing shingle (10) and a method for its manufacture, are disclosed. The shingle incorporates an upper layer (12) of conventional asphaltic composite roofing material and a lower layer (14) of a polymer foam having a thickness between 1/16 inches and one inch. The foam effectively thickens the shingle to give a layered appearance to a roof using the shingle. The polymer foam can be applied by a free blown or froth process, or preformed and adhered to the composite material sheet by adhesive techniques.
