  • Patent number: 6369878
Abstract: An imaging forming device using a platen, an upper peel roller, a lower peel roller movably positioned under and parallel to the upper peel roller, a diverter bar rotatably positioned underneath the platen and near the upper and lower peel rollers and adapted to guide a printable medium backing to move between the platen and the upper peel roller to between the upper and lower peel rollers, a peel bar rotatably positioned over the upper peel roller, a pair of lever cams rotatably positioned respectively at opposite ends of the upper and lower peel rollers, the lever cams are adapted to push the lower peel roller to press the printable medium backing against the upper peel roller during operation for moving the printable medium backing through the imaging forming device and to allow the lower peel roller to separate apart from the upper peel roller when the imaging forming device is open for loading the printable medium backing in between the upper and lower rollers.

  • Patent number: 6267521
Abstract: Apparatus for maintaining tension on a ribbon in a printer used for transferring an image, e.g., thermally, from a print head through the ribbon to a print medium. By maintaining ribbon tension and thus keeping the ribbon essentially without wrinkles, print quality is enhanced. This tension maintenance apparatus uses a pair of torqued reel subassemblies with the ribbon extending between and is of particular significance when used in conjunction with a label stock as a printer medium when the printer mechanism bidirectionally moves the label stock to assist removal of labels from its backing. These torqued reel assemblies are sufficiently loaded such that ribbon tension is maintained between these reel assemblies despite this bidirectional movement.

  • Patent number: 6123471
Abstract: A medium tracking bar is incorporated into an imaging device for preventing wrinkles or buckling of a medium strip sliding over and touching the medium tracking bar, the medium tracking bar being centrally pivoted to the imaging device by a connecting piece and being centrally pivoted by an elastic element to allow the medium tracking bar to swing like a teeter-totter board in any direction to counteract an uneven stress problem on the medium strip due to a misalignment of the medium strip and to realign the medium strip when it passes through the device thereby to prevent wrinkles or buckling of the medium strip.

  • Patent number: 6109801
Abstract: An ribbon spool and associated mounting spindle for a printer incorporates multiple longitudinal ribs on the spindle that fit into multiple longitudinal slots in the spool to acquire rotational lock between the spindle and spool. A latch at the end of selected ribs interacts with a lock ridge within the spool to acquire longitudinal lock between the spindle and spool. Placing the lock ridge near one end effectively prevents the spool from being inserted from the wrong end. The latch includes a spring-loaded detent action to hold the spool in place until an operator exerts sufficient force to overcome the latch for removal and replacement of the spool. The inner cylindrical surface of the spool is also designed to work properly with conventional spring-loaded frictional force spindles. However, the reverse is not true. Due to the sloping alignment edges on the ribs of the instant spindle, conventional spools may be blocked, thus preventing improper insertion of the old spools onto the new spindles.

  • Patent number: 6068415
Abstract: A printhead assembly for a printer with the printhead mounted in the lid of the printer and the platen mounted in the body of the printer. The printhead is spring loaded, permitting it to float in both the vertical and horizontal directions within the lid assembly. Guideposts are located in the body of the printer with a defined positional relationship to the platen. When the lid is closed, the guideposts position the printhead in its correct position with respect to the platen. Mounting the printhead in the lid and the platen in the printer body permits new paper to be loaded quickly and easily by simply pulling the paper past the platen and closing the lid. The cumbersome paper-threading procedure of conventional inexpensive printers is avoided.

  • Patent number: 5813343
Abstract: A printing media roll mounting mechanism including a frame defining a roll compartment for accommodating a printing media roll. First and second roll holders are mounted in the compartment in axial alignment substantially perpendicular to the web path for concurrent oppositely directed linear movement. The first and second roll holders are spring urged toward one another but can be moved apart to receive different width media rolls therebetween. When the first roll holder is moved outwardly, e.g., to the right, against the spring urging, the second roll holder will also move outwardly to the left. The two roll holders are spring urged toward each other to respectively engage opposite ends of a media roll core placed therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5791796
Abstract: A low cost small footprint thermal printer including a thermal print head and a motor drive roller/platen mounted opposite to the print head for pinching web material therebetween to draw said material from a supply roll and advance it past said print head. The roller/platen is mounted on a hinged door which can be opened to provide access to a supply roll compartment and closed to position the roller/platen in operative relationship adjacent to the print head. In its closed operative position, the roller/platen is spring biased against a fixedly mounted print head.

  • Patent number: 5486057
Abstract: A multicolor thermal transfer printer system (20) is disclosed which prints computer controlled patterns on both faces of cards (22) (e.g. credit cards of polymer or paper stock). The system utilizes interdigitally arranged printer modules (30) which are dimensioned to transfer each card between drive rollers (34) and idler rollers (36) of adjacent printer modules. Each printer module has a microprocessor (28) which stores in memory (172) any pattern sent by a control computer (24). As each card passes through the printer module, thermal elements (101) in a print head (38) transfer ink from a transfer ribbon (32) to the card in accordance with the stored pattern. To conserve transfer ribbon it is moved past the print head only when the print head is in a print position. Each microprocessor reports status of its printer module such as end of ribbon, broken ribbon and card location.
