  • Patent number: 4294378
Abstract: Discloses is a safety hatch cover apparatus illustrated as used on a tank of a tank-carrying vehicle such as a gasoline truck. The apparatus comprises a base member attached to the tank and having an opening adapted to be closed by a hatch cover hinged to the base member. The hatch cover carries a latch bar rotatable about an axis perpendicular to the base member and adapted to engage keeper members fixed to the base member adjacent the hatch opening. The latch bar carries a cam which turns with the longitudinal axis of the latch bar and engages biasing means carried by the cover. The biasing means, cam, latch bar and keeper members cooperate to close the cover yet permit the cover to lift in case of excess gas pressure in the tank. The apparatus also includes safety means adapted to engage the latch bar to restrain it from moving from its position in which it engages the keeper members, whether or not the cam is turned to cause the latch bar to be in locked position.

  • Patent number: 4143689
Abstract: A vapor recovery liquid dispensing nozzle having a primary vent passage, a portion of which extends outwardly through the wall of the liquid discharge tube and a normally closed vent valve in the primary vent passage. The normally closed vent valve being located on the filling tube and having a vent valve member movable between a closed position closing the primary vent passage and an open position in which the primary vent passage is open. The shroud which surrounds the liquid discharge tube engages the vent valve member to move the vent valve member between the open and closed positions in response to movement of the shroud between its extended position and its retracted position such that the primary vent passage is closed to prevent the flow of liquid through the filling tube when the shroud is extended and is open to permit the flow of liquid through the filling tube when the shroud is retracted.

  • Patent number: 4060110
Abstract: An automatic dispensing nozzle of the type incorporating a vapor recovery system wherein the sealing seat for preventing the escape of recovered vapors from the system when the nozzle is not in use is located at the position along the length of the discharge tube which is not located within the filling tube of a fluid storage tank in use. The sealing seat for the vapor recovery shroud is located rearwardly from the outer end of the discharge tube and seal closure means is disposed within the shroud and spaced a substantial distance rearwardly from the outer end of the shroud to sealingly engage the sealing seat when the shroud is in its extended position. A mechanism is also provided for preventing the operation of the dispenser nozzle until the vapor recovery system of the nozzle is in communication with the interior of the tank which is to be filled by the nozzle.

  • Patent number: 4015627
Abstract: A pressure relief valve which will move to a fully open position as soon as a predetermined pressure is established within a vessel in which the valve is mounted. The valve comprises a housing mountable in the vessel with its inner end opening inwardly of the vessel and its outer end opening outwardly of the vessel. A pressure relief passage opens through the housing and a valve member is slidably mounted with respect to the housing for movement between a first position closing the pressure relief passage and a second position in which the pressure relief passage is open to permit full flow through the pressure relief passage. Locking means is provided for releasably interlocking the valve member and the housing to retain the valve member in its first position.

  • Patent number: 3983913
Abstract: In a liquid storage tank such as an underground storage tank for liquid fuels having a liquid input passage and a vent passage, the improvement of vapor recovery passage means opening outwardly from the tank and connectible to an external vapor recovery system, the vapor recovery passage being blocked by liquid flow when the level of liquid in the tank rises above a predetermined level to prevent the discharge of vapor therethrough, signal means communicating with the vent passage means and operative in response to an increase in pressure in the vent line caused by the blockage of the vapor recovery line during the filling of the tank to provide a signal indicating that the tank has been filled to a predetermined level.

  • Patent number: 3982571
Abstract: In a dispenser nozzle having, a main body portion, a filling tube projecting from one end of said main body portion, and a liquid flow passage extending through said main body and said filling tube, the filling tube being adapted to be located within the open end of a neck of a fuel storage tank of a vehicle or the like, a control valve mechanism for controlling the flow of liquid through said liquid flow passage, said mechanism including a valve operating mechanism and latching means for releasably engaging said valve operating mechanism to render said valve operating mechanism operative when engaged by said latching mechanism and inoperative when released by said latching mechanism, the improvement of sensor means mounted on said nozzle and disposed adjacent said filling tube, said sensor means communicating with said latch means to release said latch means with respect to said valve operating mechanism to render said valve operating mechanism inoperative when said filling tube is now disposed in a predeter

  • Patent number: 3974865
Abstract: An automatic shut-off nozzle incorporating a vapor recovery system for recovering the displaced vapors from a gasoline storage tank or the like as the tank is being filled by the nozzle wherein the nozzle is automatically shut-off when the pressure within the vapor recovery system increases above a predetermined minimum pressure. The nozzle incorporates a latching mechanism which is releasable in response to the increase in pressure in the vapor recovery system and which is also responsive to a loss of vacuum pressure resulting from the level of the liquid in the storage tank rising above a predetermined level with respect to the nozzle. The nozzle is constructed such that the ambient pressure in the main diaphragm chamber corresponds to the pressure of the vapor recovery line so that the release mechanism for the slide is not as sensitive to the pressure in the gasoline storage tank.
