    Abstract: An apparatus and method for feeding cut sheets to an end device such as a printer or duplicator is disclosed. The feeding apparatus has a sheet storage assembly with a feeder mechanism. Sheets are removed from the storage assembly and delivered to a staging assembly having a sheet directing portion and a cassette interface portion. Each portion has a sheet transport surface to define an overall transport surface. The cassette interface portion has an exposed sheet conveyor characterized as a first exposed pinch roller being mechanically linked to a second pinch roller. Sheets are delivered to the sheet directing portion in response to a first sheet sensor located at the transport surface of the sheet directing portion activating the feeder mechanism. The delivered sheets are caused to engage the upstream pinch roller which conveys a first sheet to a holding position on the sheet directing portion.

    Abstract: A apparatus for recurling, transporting, sorting and stacking individually fed sheets of paper received from devices such as printing or duplicating machinery. A recurler, comprising a plurality of recurleer belts, trained about a drive roller, a feed roller, and a forward roller, against which a recurler roller is urged, is provided for recurling all sheets entering the enclosure of the sorting apparatus. A conveyor belt assembly urges the sheets against the upper surfaces of a plurality of deflectors to convey the sheets through the enclosure. A lower surface of each deflector selectively deflects the sheets into designated receiving trays, or optionally allows the sheets to be expelled from the enclosure.

    Abstract: An edge aligner/holder 10 having an edge aligner 30 with a resilient front end 32 and a tail piece 34 cooperatively interengaged with a reciprocating mechanism 36, and having a holder 20 with at least one rest 23 and one backstop 24, the holder 20 mounted above said front end 32 on said edge aligner 30. The resilient front end 32 of the edge aligner 30 holds a job stack 2 containing sheets which already have been piled in alignment when the edge aligner 30 is in its forward position, while at the same time holding the trailing edge of a next sheet 3, the leading edge of which sheet has already been deposited upon the job stack 2, so that the offset movement of this next sheet 3 may be accomplished without disturbing the alignment and piling of the job stack 2 immediately below it.

    Abstract: A jogging apparatus 22 has motor 24 mounted within a support frame 20. Motor 24 has a motor shaft 28 to which is connected hub 30. Projecting outwardly from motor hub 30 along an axis parallel to, but eccentrically offset from, the axis of motor shaft 28 is eccentric pin 34. Slotted link 32 slidably engages slot pins 36 and 38 in transverse slots 42 and 44 respectively of slotted link 32 for transverse movement of slotted link 32. Slotted link 32 also has an orthogonal slot 46 generally perpendicular to transverse slots 42 and 44. Eccentric pin 34 is slidably engaged within orthogonal slot 46 such that as motor shaft 28 is rotated, the rotational motion of shaft 28 is converted into the side-to-side motion of slotted link 32. Eccentric pin 34 projects somewhat beyond the outer surface of slotted link 32 and typically terminates in enlarged head 57. Enlarged head 57, with respect to orthogonal slot 46, describes an up and down movement within slot 46, as motor shaft 28 rotates.

    Abstract: The present invention comprises a paper sheet stacking and jogging apparatus for the semi-continuous stacking and jogging of individually fed sheets of paper from devices such as printing or duplicating machinery. A conveyor, comprising a pair of powered forward pinch rollers and a pair of powered rearward pinch rollers each having a plurality of driving tires, conveys the sheets within the apparatus. A beam strengthener, comprising two pairs of crowned and recessed tires, which are not driving tires, give the sheets beam strength as they are deposited to prevent jamming of the apparatus. A high-capacity, self-leveling tray assembly and elevating elevator receives the deposited sheets. A jogger selectively jogs the sheets which are deposited into the tray assembly into physically separated, distinct, aligned job stacks.

    Abstract: The present invention comprises a dual tote sorting and stacking apparatus for continuously transporting, sorting and stacking sequentially fed sheets of paper such as from printing, copying and duplicating machinery. The apparatus employs mass airflow type of conveyors for paper transport. A diverter is provided for selectively diverting the sheet to designated receiving trays or, optionally, for expelling the sheet from the apparatus. A jogger is provided for jogging the sheets which are deposited into the trays into individually aligned job stacks. An assembly may also be provided for flipping the sheets as they enter the apparatus or for feeding individual sequentially fed sheets into the apparatus.

    Abstract: A sheet feeding apparatus including an air flow sheet separation mechanism for feeding individual sheets of paper from a stack of sheets slanted slightly from the vertical. A flow of air established through a plurality of resiliently surfaced feed wheels draws individual sheets seriatim from the nearly vertical stack of sheets into driving contact with feed rollers located adjacent the upper edge of the stack of sheets and mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis. Each sheet is then drawn upwardly by frictional contact with the feed rollers into the nip of a pair of opposed feed rolls which are mounted for rotation about a horizontal axis parallel to the feed wheel axis. The sheet is then delivered by conveyors to a sorting mechanism or other sheet fed device.

    Abstract: Paper handling equipment is disclosed having a cart and a paper feeder. The paper feeder has an elevator and a paper feed train. The cart allows rolling transfer of a stack of paper sheets from the cart to the elevator in the paper feeder. The elevator positions the stack of paper sheets with respect to a desired elevation of the top sheet in the stack. The paper feed train removes the top sheet from the stack of paper in the elevator by using a rotating high-vacuum wheel. Included is a marker sheet detection means for detecting specially prepared marker sheets. A doubles detector is used to eliminate double sheets which are inadvertently fed into the paper feed train. A counting means is used to count the number of single sheets fed. A control means is used to automatically feed a preprogrammed number of sheets from a number of different types of paper separated by marker sheets. Excess copies of paper sheets of any particular type are rejected into a rejection tray.

    Abstract: Sorting and collating apparatus for use with copying and duplicating machinery for distribution of flexible sheet material to designated stations or series of stations. The device has an interface unit for accepting paper sheet copies and which selectively diverts said copies into a tray or to the base of the sorter tower. From the base the copies are either directed into the sorter tower to a designated bin or they are sent on to the next sorter tower module. The apparatus employs mass air movement type conveyors for paper transport. Means are provided for selectively diverting paper copies into designated paper receiving bins, and means may also be provided for maintaining the papers in aligned relationship in the individual paper receiving stations.
