  • Patent number: 4934891
Abstract: It is necesary to supply electronic components to a precise location in a transfer station 26, the components being supplied in a plurality of magazines 22 e.g. for a component placement machine. Desirably the magazines may be readily exchanged without significant time being taken in setting up the magazine position accurately. Suitably the magazines are mounted on a turntable 24 each magazine having a location mark 362 positioned accurately relative to a transfer position 286. Drive structure 264 moves the turntable 24 to present the transfer position 286 of the magazine 22 at the transfer station 26 and sensing structure 358 senses the mark 362 when the supply structure 18 is in a characterizing mode. Information supplied by the sensing structure 358 determines when the transfer position 286 is at a precise location of the transfer station 26.

  • Patent number: 4929828
Abstract: Apparatus for detecting line-over defects at the finish of a glassware container. A bifurcated fiber optic bundle includes sender and receiver fiber branches; one of the branches terminates at a modulated visible red high intensity LED light source, the other at a photosensor. The non-bifurcated, probe end of the fiber optic cable terminates in a rectangular pattern of sending and receiving fibers in a random mix. The probe end of the fiber optic bundle is positioned directly over the container finish and pointed straight down. An intervening lens assembly produces a focused 1:1 image of the rectangular pattern at the bottle finish with the long axis of the rectangle oriented radially across the finish. An electronic assembly modulates the LED, demodulates the photodetector output, and detects sharp reductions in the intensity of light reflected back to the receiver fibers, indicative of line-over defects.

  • Patent number: 4914590
Abstract: A hybrid natural language understanding (NLU) system which is particularly designed for processing natural language text. Primary functional components of the NLU system include a preprocessor; a word look-up and morphology module which communicates with a lexicon and a learning module; a syntactic parser which interfaces with an augmented transition network (ATN) grammar; a case frame applier, which converts the syntactic structure into canonical, semantic "case frames"; and a discourse analysis component which integrates explicit and implied information in the text into a conceptual structure which represents its meaning. This structure may be passed on to a knowledge based system, data base, to interested analysts or decision makers, etc. Significant feedback points are provided, e.g., the case frame applier may notify the syntactic parser of a semantically incorrect parse, or the syntactic parser may seek a semantic judgment based on a fragmentary parse.
