Patent number: 6113596Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument system including an RF energy source that has two bipolar terminals of opposite polarity and two monopolar terminals, one being active and the other being passive. Switches are provided for selectively energizing the bipolar terminals and the monopolar terminals. The system includes an electrosurgical instrument that has two tissue-contacting members and at least two electrodes. One electrode may be associated with each of the tissue-contacting members, or both electrodes may be associated with one of the tissue-contacting members. Two conductors are provided for connecting the two electrodes to the positive and negative bipolar terminals respectively. A third conductor is provided for connecting either of the electrodes or one of the tissue-contacting members to the active monopolar terminal. The system also includes a patient return electrode pad which is in electrical communication with the pass of monopolar terminal.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1997Date of Patent: September 5, 2000Assignee: Enable Medical CorporationInventors: Michael D. Patent number: 6086586Abstract: A bipolar electrosurgical instrument having a pair of relatively moveable jaws, each of which includes a tissue contacting surface. The tissue contacting surfaces of the jaws are in face-to-face relation with one another, and adjacent each of the tissue contacting surfaces are first and second spaced-apart electrodes that are adapted for connection to the opposite terminals of a bipolar RF generator so as to generator a current flow therebetween. The first and second electrodes of one jaw are in opposed relation, respectively, with the first and second electrodes of the other jaw. The tissue contacting surfaces are disposed between the electrodes on each jaw, and the first opposed electrodes of each jaw are connectable to one terminal of the bipolar RF generator, while the second opposed electrodes of each jaw are connectable to the other terminal of the bipolar RF generator.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1998Date of Patent: July 11, 2000Assignee: Enable Medical CorporationInventor: Michael D. Patent number: 6036681Abstract: A method for morselating and removing the morselated tissue through a small incision comprising in general inserting a tissue container into the body cavity of a patient through an incision, placing resected tissue in the vessel, inserting a morselator having a rotatable electrode thereon through the incision and into the vessel, morselating the tissue and removing the tissue from the containment vessel and the body. An apparatus for morselating and removing tissue through a small incision within the body cavity of a patient is also disclosed and may comprise a tissue container having an inner chamber for containing resected tissue, and a morselator having a proximal end and a distal end carrying an electrode wherein the distal end is insertable into the body cavity and containment vessel for morselating resected tissue.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1997Date of Patent: March 14, 2000Assignee: Enable Medical CorporationInventor: Michael D. Patent number: 6022313Abstract: A minimally invasive technique for harvesting saphenous veins and the like for use as autografts in coronary artery bypass grafting surgery include a microsurgical instrument adapted to be demountably secured to the distal end of an endoscope. The instrument is inserted through an entry incision in the patient's skin, at the end of the endoscope which is used by a surgeon to advance the instrument along the saphenous vein, using the vein as a guide for the instrument. The instrument is tapered to provide initial separation of surrounding tissues from the vein, and cutting means supported by the instrument and viewed via the endoscope allow dissection of all tissues and side branch vessels from the saphenous vein. The instrument further provides a protective hood which prevents tissues or skin from blocking the endoscope. The desired length of saphenous vein is transected and is extracted via the entry incision. The technique minimizes trauma to the patient and to the saphenous vein graft.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1998Date of Patent: February 8, 2000Assignees: Cardiothoracic Systems, Inc., Enable Medical CorporationInventors: Richard Ginn, Mike Hooven, Ted Richardson

Patent number: 5951549Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument, such as a scissors, in which the handle and blade members are of a conventional construction. Each blade member supports a detachable cartridge member made of an insulating material and supporting at least one electrode. The cartridge members do not interfere with the cutting engagement of the blade members. Each cartridge member can also permit relative movement between its electrode and associated cutting edge from a first position in which the electrodes are between the cutting edges (when the blades are open) to a second position in which each electrode is behind its respective cutting edge (as the blades are closed).Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1996Date of Patent: September 14, 1999Assignee: Enable Medical CorporationInventors: Theodore A.
