  • Patent number: 6139214
Abstract: A coupling for releasably connecting first and second parts of an apparatus such as a surgical instrument. The coupling comprises a socket member on the first part of the apparatus, the socket member having an axially extending central opening, and a plug member on the second part of the apparatus. The socket member includes a first manually depressible release button and a first locking element spaced apart from each other on opposite sides of the central opening and movable radially with each other relative to the central opening when the plug member is received in the central opening in the socket member. The first locking element moves away from the central opening when the first release button is depressed.

  • Patent number: 6062951
Abstract: A method includes the steps of providing fixed and movable cutting jaws for a surgical instrument, the fixed jaw having an opening in which the movable jaw is receivable; providing a fixture; placing the fixed jaw on the fixture; supporting the movable jaw on the fixture for pivotal movement relative to the fixture at a location spaced apart from the fixed jaw; pivoting the movable jaw relative to the fixture to a stop position; and grinding the movable jaw to reduce the length of the movable jaw so that the movable jaw fits within the opening in the fixed jaw.

  • Patent number: 6048339
Abstract: A surgical instrument (10) includes a rigid stem section (12) defining a longitudinal axis (32) of the surgical instrument. The rigid stem section (12) has a central passage (86) for aspirating human tissue through the rigid stem section. A flexible stem section (14) extends from the rigid stem section (12). The flexible stem section (14) has a central passage (86) for aspirating human tissue through the flexible stem section. The flexible stem (14) section has a distal end portion (68) defining a suction opening (74) of the surgical instrument (10). The suction opening (74) communicates with the central passage (86) of the flexible stem section (14). The flexible stem section (14) comprises a bendable outer tubular member (60) and a bendable inner tubular member (90) slidable within the outer tubular member. The outer tubular member (60) has a neutral axis of bending (66).

  • Patent number: 5938678
Abstract: A surgical instrument (10) includes a handle (12), a rigid stem section (20) extending from the handle, and a flexible stem section (24) extending from the rigid stem section. A surgical tool (30) connected with a distal end of the flexible stem section (24) includes a movable part (34). The flexible stem section (24) comprises a plurality of relatively pivotable vertebrae (120-129) extending along the flexible stem section and an extension spring (150) extending axially through the plurality of vertebrae for transmitting axial load between the surgical tool (30) and the rigid stem section (20). An actuator cable (180) extends through the extension spring (150) and is connected with the movable tool part (34) for applying force to the movable tool part to move the movable tool part relative to the flexible stem section (24). The extension spring (150) carries the axial load on the flexible stem section (24).

  • Patent number: 5885288
Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a manually engageable handle and a first stem section having a longitudinal axis and extending from the handle. A tip portion of the surgical instrument has a suction port for applying suction to tissue and a fluid outlet port for directing fluid to tissue. A second stem section is connected between the first stem section and the tip portion and has at least a portion which is bendable. The second stem section supports the tip portion for movement between a plurality of orientations relative to the axis and to the first stem section. The surgical instrument includes means for bending the bendable portion of the second stem section to change the orientation of the tip portion of the surgical instrument relative to the axis and to the first stem section from a first orientation to a second orientation.
