Patent number: 4321300Abstract: A solar energy collector having improved absorptance and emissivity levels comprising: (1) a silver-copper oxide-rhodium oxide solar absorption film, (2) a cerium oxide interlayer and a substrate of quartz, silica glass or metal. The cerium oxide interlayer minimizes agglomeration of the metal particles, maintains a relatively low thermal emittance and improves overall stability.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1980Date of Patent: March 23, 1982Assignee: Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corp.Inventors: Robert J. Farrauto, Joseph C. Williams, Herbert Myers

Patent number: 4316813Abstract: Sulfur-containing compounds such as hydrogen sulfide and sulfur oxides arising from gasification or combustion of organic fuels such as coal may be removed from the hot gases by attrition resistant, highly reactive limestone-based sorbent agglomerates. The agglomerates are formed by crushing and powdering naturally occurring limestone into grains of fine particle size and binding the powdered limestone grains with a binder that is stable at high temperature, for example a colloidal grade of attapulgite clay. Volatile liquid is added to the mix of binder and powdered limestone to form a paste-like mixture, which is then agglomerated in compression-type agglomerating equipment to form spheroidal agglomerates having good green strength. In fluidized bed combustion applications, these agglomerates have attrition resistance equivalent to conventional natural limestone granules and are far more reactive in terms of sulfur pickup.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1980Date of Patent: February 23, 1982Assignee: Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corp.Inventor: Kenneth E. Patent number: 4310605Abstract: A fuel cell system is comprised of a fuel cell module including sub-stacks of series-connected fuel cells, the sub-stacks being held together in a stacked arrangement with cold plates of a cooling means located between the sub-stacks to function as electrical terminals. The anode and cathode terminals of the sub-stacks are connected in parallel by means of the coolant manifolds which electrically connect selected cold plates. The system may comprise a plurality of the fuel cell modules connected in series. The sub-stacks are designed to provide a voltage output equivalent to the desired voltage demand of a low voltage, high current DC load such as an electrolytic cell to be driven by the fuel cell system. This arrangement in conjunction with switching means can be used to drive a DC electrical load with a total voltage output selected to match that of the load being driven. This arrangement eliminates the need for expensive voltage regulation equipment.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 1980Date of Patent: January 12, 1982Assignee: Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corp.Inventors: Jack Early, Arthur Kaufman, Alfred Stawsky

Patent number: 4307136Abstract: An improvement is disclosed for the nonelectrolytic deposition of gold by autocatalytic chemical reduction of a deposition bath containing a soluble gold salt in a strongly alkaline medium by initially adding to the deposition bath an effective amount of a metal from Group III, IV or V of the periodic classification of elements in the form of a soluble salt.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1979Date of Patent: December 22, 1981Assignee: Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corp.Inventors: Patrick Prost-Tournier, Christiane Allemmoz

Patent number: 4291023Abstract: Cis-diammineplatinum (II) organophosphate complexes where the organophosphate moiety is a glycerophosphate or a monosaccharide phosphate moiety are prepared by reaction of cis-diaquodiammineplatinum (II) salts with alkali metal organophosphates. The resulting complexes possess pronounced anti-tumor activity and low toxicity; consequently, they have high therapeutic indices.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1979Date of Patent: September 22, 1981Assignee: Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corp.Inventors: James D. Hoeschele, Alan R. Amundsen

Patent number: 4291027Abstract: Ethylenediamine platinum (II) and 1,2-diaminocyclohexane platinum (II) pyrophosphate complexes are prepared by reaction of the appropriate diaquo platinum (II) salt with a pyrophosphate salt. These complexes possess pronounced anti-tumor activity and low toxicity and thus have high therapeutic indices.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 1979Date of Patent: September 22, 1981Assignee: Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corp.Inventors: James D. Hoeschel, Alan R. Amundsen

Patent number: 4178350Abstract: Tritiated species, e.g., tritium, tritiated water, and/or tritiated hydrocarbons, are removed from gas streams comprised thereof by reacting the same over a precious metal catalyst with sufficient air or oxygen to insure conversion of all tritiated species to tritiated water and, if hydrocarbons are present in the gaseous feedstock, carbon dioxide. The tritiated water and any other moisture that might be present in the reaction effluent are next adsorbed by a desiccant dryer, preferably to a level of less than one part per million. Most desirably, the desiccant dryer effluent is then diluted with non-radioactive water such that the tritiated water is diluted by a factor of at least about 1,000 to 1; the resulting water mixture can be adsorbed from the diluted effluent by a second dessicant dryer to provide a value in the ultimate effluent gas of less than about one-half parts per billion tritiated water.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1973Date of Patent: December 11, 1979Assignee: Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corp.Inventors: Martin F. Collins, Romuald Michalek

Patent number: 4094142Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a gas turbine system are disclosed utilizing an adiabatic combustion process, employing combustion of a pre-mixed carbonaceous fuel-air admixture in a combustion zone. The combustion and the combustion zone are maintained at an approximately constant temperature by selective control of the fuel-to-air ratio over a period of turbine operation during which the fuel demand or the combustion air temperature varies. Such control of the combustion zone temperature is such that said constant temperature is substantially above the instantaneous auto-ignition temperature of the fuel-air admixture. The resulting effluent is characterized by high thermal energy useful for generating power and may be low in atmospheric pollutants, including oxides of nitrogen.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1976Date of Patent: June 13, 1978Assignee: Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corp.Inventor: William C. Patent number: 4092400Abstract: A process for recovering tungsten values in the form of ammonium paratungstate from tungsten ores and ore concentrates, particularly wolframite ores and ore concentrates, incorporating a plurality of steps for necessary removal of impurities and formation of the product ammonium paratungstate. The steps of the process include grinding, caustic leaching, filtrations, chemical treatment including acidification particularly for the removal of silica impurities, further filtration, solvent extraction of the tungsten values, stripping of the tungsten values from the solvent solution in the form of ammonium paratungstate, and recovery of the ammonium paratungstate product. The caustic leaching step may be carried out in the substantial absence of oxygen.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1977Date of Patent: May 30, 1978Assignee: Engelhard Minerals & Chemicals Corp.Inventors: Vladimir Zbranek, Zdenka Zbranek, Daniel Arthur Burnham
