Patent number: 7027454Abstract: A transmitter is provided for simultaneously transmitting a plurality of signals in a plurality of directive beams to corresponding destination stations, each destination station located in a separate fan within a service area. The transmitter includes a plurality of beamformers, each beamformer receiving one of the signals to be transmitted to an associated fan, each of the beamformers having a plurality of outputs for each different signal to be transmitted. A plurality of Butler matrices each receive one of the plurality of outputs from the plurality of beamformers for each different signal to be transmitted, each Butler matrix having a plurality of outputs in phased relationship to one another, wherein each of the signals to be transmitted is simultaneously provided across the outputs of each Butler matrix in a phased relationship.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2001Date of Patent: April 11, 2006Assignee: Ericcson Inc.Inventor: Paul W. Patent number: 6353733Abstract: A portable communication device includes a rotating member and a latching mechanism which employs a magnet means and a quantity of magneto-rheological fluid (“MR” fluid) or electro-rheological (“ER”) fluid therein to latch the rotatable member against the primary body of the portable communication device when a magnetic or electric field is positioned proximate to the MR or ER fluid. The rotating member can be a low-profile flip and/or antenna. The magnet means can be an electromagnetic field or at least one translatable permanent magnet. Additionally, a portable communication device with a translating antenna and an antenna receptacle and elbow also includes a quantity of magneto-rheological fluid therein. The device can also include an externally accessible latch release which controls the application of the magnetic field to the MR fluid (or electric filed to the ER fluid). Associated latching mechanisms employ rheological fluid and a magnetic or electric field source.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1999Date of Patent: March 5, 2002Assignee: Ericcson Inc.Inventors: Matthew J. Patent number: 6343070Abstract: A method of acquiring communications with a communications system having a plurality of communications channels includes storing a previously acquired communications channel in user terminal memory. The user terminal searches for the previously acquired communications channel in said user terminal memory, and acquires the previously acquired communications channel when the previously acquired communications channel is available. Channel acquisition times can thus be reduced.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1998Date of Patent: January 29, 2002Assignee: Ericcson Inc.Inventors: Kevin Klas, Raymond C. Henry, Jr.

Patent number: 6249688Abstract: An indirect electrical coupling for a cellular telephone antenna is created by a rotary primary antenna and a stationary paging antenna when the primary antenna is extended into an operative position. When extended, the primary antenna is positioned proximate to the secondary antenna to define an electrical coupling therebetween. Rotating the primary antenna away from the extended position automatically disengages the primary antenna from the telephone operating circuit. The antenna elements or antenna spacings provide the appropriate matching circuitry and the advancement and retraction of the primary antenna provides the switching of the matching circuitry.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1998Date of Patent: June 19, 2001Assignee: Ericcson Inc.Inventors: Howard E. Holshouser, Gerard J. Hayes

Patent number: 6240301Abstract: A diversity antenna module includes a diversity antenna and preferably has outer dimensions no larger than a SIM card. The diversity antenna module mates with a shell housing communications electronics for a wireless communications device, such as communications electronics adapted for PDC operation. The diversity antenna module, when mated to the shell, provides the communications electronics within the shell with an alternative antenna, as is required by the PDC specifications. The same shell, or another shell of the same mechanical dimensions, may alternatively house a different set of communications electronics, such as some adapted for GSM operation. A traditional SIM module may be mated to this second shell to provide alternative communications functionality.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1998Date of Patent: May 29, 2001Assignee: Ericcson Inc.Inventor: John C. Patent number: 6101402Abstract: A radiotelephone having a slidably retractable member with an acoustic duct for transmitting sound through the member into a microphone housed in the radiotelephone's main body. The member is slidable to an extended position for use such that a sound inlet of the acoustic duct is exposed for collecting sound as a person speaks into it. Sound travels through the acoustic duct and passes directly through a sound outlet into the microphone. A sealing member adjacent the microphone acoustically seals the sound outlet to a sound port in the microphone. Features are provided on the slidable member and main body for guiding the member into its retracted and extended positions. Also, detent features hold the member in its two positions. In one embodiment, the member covers an external face of the radiotelephone when retracted.Type: GrantFiled: September 4, 1997Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: Ericcson Inc.Inventors: Istvan Bartha, Curtis W. Patent number: 6038226Abstract: A combined signalling and PCM cross-connect and packet assembly/disassembly engine includes a cross-connect memory, wherein the memory advantageously includes both a subscriber PCM channel memory that cross-connects bus side PCM channels to optical fiber timeslots, and a separate signalling memory that cross-connects associated signalling data channels to optical fiber timeslots. In particular, the PCM and signalling data memories are substantially the same size and each signalling data channel is mapped to an address in the signalling memory that corresponds to the PCM memory address of the associated PCM channel. Cross-connect information used for the PCM channels is also used to cross-connect the associated signalling channels. Cross-connect and packet engine functions are combined, thereby eliminating the need for a separate buffer to accommodate differences in transmission rates between them.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1997Date of Patent: March 14, 2000Assignee: Ericcson Inc.Inventors: William F. Ellersick, Rocco Falcomato, Steven Philip Saneski

Patent number: 6030009Abstract: Sliding latches are disposed on the mounting plate of an accessory to a base member. The sliding latches are biased towards respective extended positions at which the latches engage undercuts provided in an exterior surface of the base member. The sliding latches are also biased towards their engagement in the undercuts with a force sufficient to maintain such engagement until a predetermined force is applied to either the base member or the accessory, whereupon the sliding latches move toward a retracted position and the accessory separates from the base member. The sliding latches are interconnected by cam members rotatably mounted on the mounting plate, with at least one of the cam members being directly biased toward rotation in a direction which urges the sliding latches toward their respective extended positions.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1998Date of Patent: February 29, 2000Assignee: Ericcson Inc.Inventors: Stefan N. A. Stalgren, Bradley T. Philippi

Patent number: 5869897Abstract: A top surface of a protective cover of an IC component package is provided with a centered-protrusion, e.g., such as a cylindrical peg, that extends above the cover. A retaining-spring is formed by twisting a resilient (e.g., metal) metal strip into a ribbon-like shape having opposing ends that extend from a curvelinear bottom surface. The bottom surface of the retaining-spring is provided with an opening configured to mate with the centered protrusion on the package cover, such that the opposing ends of the retaining-spring extend away from the package cover at substantially the same, albeit reverse angles. In order to mount the IC package to a heat sink, the bottom surface of the retaining-spring may be compressively mated onto the package cover at the same time the package is inserted between two substantially parallel walls protruding from the heat sink surface, wherein the walls are distanced from each other.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1997Date of Patent: February 9, 1999Assignee: Ericcson, Inc.Inventors: Larry C.
