Abstract: A home safety unit having an emergency light system for providing light in the event of a power failure or the detection of a fire condition, and a fire detection system for providing an alarm indicating the existence of a fire. The safety unit is designed to have an aesthetically pleasing appearance and to be installed inconspicuously between the base of an existing light fixture and a wall or ceiling. Installation of the safety unit is a simple process, whether installing it when constructing a new building or by retro-fitting it into an existing building.A modified light switch having parallel impedance across the light switch terminals is installed to provide continuous power to the safety unit when the switch is in its off position. Also included is a low voltage dropout system for disconnecting the auxiliary lights when the battery voltage falls below a certain level and for providing an audible alarm indicating this low voltage condition.
Abstract: A material useful as a separator in batteries and a process for making the material is provided. This material is a polyolefin having grafted to it side chains derived from an ethylenically unsaturated ionogenic monomer and cross-linked with sulfur.

Abstract: A process for improving leakage resistant in a galvanic cell is provided. This is done by making an improved grommet and metal cover. The process comprises swelling a grommet which has been placed tightly around the periphery of a metal cover until the grommet is loose upon the metal cover, forcing a sealant solution between the swollen grommet and metal cover and then shrinking the grommet to substantially its original size to trap the sealant compound between the grommet and metal cover.
Abstract: A lead dioxide electrode structure for an electrochemical battery is formed using a mixture of lead dioxide particles, carbon black particles, and a latex. The materials are mixed to form a compact and homogeneous electrode mixture. The mixture is then coated upon a conductive layer which is binded to a shim. This structure is useful as a cathode in an electrochemical primary battery of the reserve type.
