Patent number: 8228540Abstract: A method, an apparatus, and computer-readable medium with instructions to carry out a method. The method is to rasterize variable and non-variable content for multiple instances of a page and includes dividing a page is into a plurality of non-overlapping parts including variable content. The method includes rasterizing the page with no variable content present into a rasterized fixed page that includes for at least any part that has no variable content a rasterized fixed image. The method further includes identifying one or more parts of the plurality of parts of the page that have variable content, and rasterizing each instance of the page with the variable elements of the page instance into a rasterized instance that includes, for each part that has variable content, a rasterized variable image that includes the variable content and any non-variable content of the instance. The generated rasterized fixed images and rasterized variable images for each instance are combinable.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2008Date of Patent: July 24, 2012Assignee: Esko IP NVInventor: Johan Himpe

Patent number: 8169435Abstract: A method, and apparatus, and a computer-readable medium encoded with instructions to carry out a method. The method is of rendering a model of a surface of wrinkly material such as paper or foil, e.g., a model of packaging on a display device. The method includes accepting a description of the different parts of the surface of the packaging, and how and where any of the parts are connected, discretizing to form a mesh, modelling the physics of the mesh, running a simulation to find a stable end-state for the mesh, modifying the mesh to visually smooth the mesh in a way that is perceived as typical for flexible packaging material; and rendering the model on a display device. The modifying the mesh is to visually smooth the mesh includes modifying during the rendering or modifying prior to the rendering.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 2008Date of Patent: May 1, 2012Assignee: Esko IP NVInventors: Kristiaan K. Publication number: 20120019552Abstract: A method, system and computer readable media relating to automatically adjusting a graphics feature to compensate for a predetermined resolution limit. The method generally relates to automatically identifying, within a selected area of a graphics file, one or more portions of at least one graphics feature meeting predetermined criteria for adjustment, including criteria for defining a thin portion having a thickness less than the resolution limit. The method then automatically modifies only the identified one or more portions to have an adjusted thickness greater than the initial thickness. Additional criteria may be used to restrict which thin portions of the feature are actually modified.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 21, 2010Publication date: January 26, 2012Applicant: ESKO IP NVInventors: Luc Henri Maria Leon Schildermans, Wim Jan C. Publication number: 20110216374Abstract: A method for adjusting color tones of an input digital image file to create an adjusted digital image file. A plurality of predetermined curves are provided, each curve specifying an adjusted color tone percentage output as a function of input color tone percentage and representing a combination of midpoint magnitude and contrast different than for any other curve. The method comprises selecting a curve by determining which one of the plurality of curves most closely matches at least two data points. The selected curve is then applied to the input digital image file to produce the adjusted digital image file.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 8, 2009Publication date: September 8, 2011Applicant: ESKO IP NVInventor: Mark Samworth

Patent number: 7881818Abstract: A method to aid designing flexible packaging for wrapping around a solid object and finalizing the packaging. The method includes accepting a description of the surface of a sheet of packaging material after wrapping around the solid object and finalizing, using a mapping of points in the 2D plane of the sheet of the packaging material to the corresponding points in the 3D surface of the wrapped and finalized packaging. The method further includes displaying the surface of the wrapped and finalized packaging or displaying graphic elements on the surface of wrapped and finalized packaging. A version includes pre-distorting graphics to correct for any distortions to graphics that occur during the wrapping and finalizing process, and generating press-ready graphics from the pre-distorted graphics for printing onto the surface of the sheet of packaging material.Type: GrantFiled: September 29, 2006Date of Patent: February 1, 2011Assignee: Esko IP NVInventors: Kristiaan K. Patent number: 7599088Abstract: Planar substrates are printed, cut, and folded to form three-dimensional cartons. Given graphics intended to appear on a carton surface or panel, printed graphics are laid-out and automatically positioned and manipulated using structural information associated with the cartons. Preferably a single computer-generated graphics file is created for use in printing the various panels and flaps. The graphics design can be overlaid on a computer image of the substrate, and graphic portions can be rotated, scaled, and aligned to properly fit printing areas on what will be panels and flaps (after cutting occurs). A computer generated three-dimensional image of the carton showing graphics printed on the panels and flaps can be manipulated by a graphics artist to confirm accuracy of the graphic file data before actual printing occurs.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2004Date of Patent: October 6, 2009Assignee: Esko IP NVInventor: Franky Bru

Patent number: 7580154Abstract: A method, associated software and resulting printing plate having both solid and halftone areas comprising ink cells. Ink cells may be provided in the solid areas according to a first pattern with a first density and size of cells per unit area, and in the halftone areas superposed on selected numbers of halftone dots. The selection of halftone dots with superposed ink cells may be according to a second pattern with a second density and size of cells in the halftone area that is a function of halftone dot size and that may or may not be be related to the first pattern.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 2004Date of Patent: August 25, 2009Assignee: ESKO IP NVInventor: Mark Samworth

Patent number: 7346408Abstract: A method and a carrier medium carrying code to execute a method of designing a carton. The method includes accepting carton structural information, forming a 2D unfolded model of the substrate that when cut and folded forms the carton, and forming a 3D model of the carton. The method further includes displaying a 2D view of the unfolded carton design, and a perspective view of the 3D model. A user has the ability to manipulate the view of the 3D model, and also to select a flap of the carton on perspective view. As a result of the selecting, the method modifies the 2D unfolded view to be of the selected flap shown in an orientation suitable for designing the selected flap. The user designs the flap and the method accepts the design. The method includes modifying the perspective view of the 3D model to include any changes made in the design.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2005Date of Patent: March 18, 2008Assignee: Esko IP NVInventors: Kristiaan K.
