Abstract: A reusable/disposable enclosure for an blood pressure cuff for a sphygmomanometer includes a pouch having an opening therein for holding a blood pressure cuff and further includes a flexible fastener operatively arranged to open the pouch and at least partially close the pouch when the blood pressure cuff is enclosed therein. The flexible fastener includes a first strip having at least one male rib portion extending therefrom and a second strip having at least two female rib portions extending therefrom, which form a channel for complementarily accepting the male rib portion. Thus, the first and second strips may be matingly engaged to one another for partially closing the enclosure. The enclosure is translucent and includes a fibrous outer surface and a fluid impermeable inner surface. The outer surface is comfortable to a user and the fluid impermeable surface prevents contamination and/or soiling of the blood pressure cuff contained therein.

  • Patent number: 5492531
Abstract: A stomach lavage apparatus for the introduction of a highly absorbent antidote solution, such as activated charcoal, into the gastric cavity for the purpose of absorbing or otherwise counteracting a digested poison present therein, is described. The lavage apparatus is a completely closed system so that the antidote solution is never exposed to the atmosphere and there is no risk of spilling the antidote solution. The present invention thus comprises a flexible container for the antidote solution, the container being connectable to a lavage conduit leading into the gastric cavity by threading the container into a fitting provided with an internal spike. This causes the spike to puncture a rupturable seal provided in an exit port of the container, and the container is then squeezed to express the antidote solution therefrom and into the lavage conduit for introduction into the gastric cavity.

  • Patent number: 4139010
Abstract: A sterility guard for piercing devices, connectors and needles such as are used in the medical and surgical fields, which gives positive indication if the same has been removed from the piercing device or other connector and subsequently replaced, thereby compromising the sterility of the device. In one form a tubular guard closed at one end is adapted to be applied over a blood spike, for instance, and a projecting portion at the open end of the guard is provided with an integral extension which is engageable in an opening in a portion of the blood spike or a connector of another kind. This extension has a weakened or attenuated portion which is broken when the guard is removed to give a positive indication that the guard may have been removed even though it is later replaced. In another form the guard is used to protect the sterility of the otherwise exposed ends of a pair of connectors or the like.
