Patent number: 5628231Abstract: An improved sight glass for use in determining the level of water in steam boilers and similar installations is disclosed. The end flanges are provided with molded inserts, preferably of PTFE or similar fluorocarbon material which serves to provide a sealing washer when the device is connected to communicating pipe flanges at an outer surface thereof, and provides a seal at the annular end surfaces of the sight glass. A concentrically disposed guard tube is also maintained in sealed relation relative to the end flanges, and is preferably of polycarbonate or similar material. The guard tube is supported by oppositely disposed rectangular cross-sectioned "O" rings which provide for the sealing of the cylindrically shaped space between the outer surface of the sight glass and the inner surface of the guard tube. Peripherally positioned tie rods prevent excess tightening of the end flanges, thus preventing excess axially oriented pressure on the sight glass.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1995Date of Patent: May 13, 1997Assignee: Ethylene Corp.Inventor: Michael R. Patent number: 4949858Abstract: A sample collection container for use in receiving samples for analysis and testing of fluids from a sample valve forming part of a chemical process line. The container includes a closure element which selectively engages the sample valve during collection and provides means for protecting the user handling the sample container after disengagement from the sample valve from spillage. The container closure is selectively engageable by a cap element when disengaged from the sample valve, the cap element having an orificed end wall which may be selectively closed or provided with means supporting a penetrable membrane for hypodermic extraction of fluid.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1989Date of Patent: August 21, 1990Assignee: Ethylene Corp.Inventor: Michael Sheridan

Patent number: 4888154Abstract: A device capable of being mounted in a small opening in a reactor vessel, after having been inserted through a manway, which permits the continuous sampling of the contents of the reactor during a reaction, and continuous monitoring of the pH factor or other characteristic of interest. Electrical probe replacement is possible without disconnecting the device from the reactor vessel, and requires only a minimum of down time.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 1987Date of Patent: December 19, 1989Assignee: Ethylene Corp.Inventor: Michael Sheridan

Patent number: 4873876Abstract: A chemical process sampler for use in monitoring the progress of chemical processing particularly suited for the handling of toxic, volatile, or otherwise dangerous substances. The sampler is characterized in the provision of multi-position valve structure for returning a contained sample to the processing vessel after use, thereby eliminating the need for separate disposal.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1988Date of Patent: October 17, 1989Assignee: Ethylene Corp.Inventors: Michael Sheridan, Kenneth Jaffe

Patent number: 4838095Abstract: An improved sight glass for use with sampling systems employed for testing the content of chemical reaction vessels. In addition to incorporating a check valve for preventing contamination of a vacuum source, the device incorporates provision for entrapping and draining sampled fluids in the event of leakage or fracture of the glass components thereof. This is accomplished by providing an inner transparent glass tube, the inner surface of which is chemically inert, and an outer concentric tube of synthetic resinous material which surrounds the inner tube and is less subject to breakage. The cylindrical interstice between the inner and outer tubes forms a drain for retaining leakage caused by fracture of the inner tube. A floating valve cooperates with a valve seat positioned longitudinally medially of the inner and outer tubes.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1988Date of Patent: June 13, 1989Assignee: Ethylene Corp.Inventors: Michael Sheridan, Kenneth Jaffe

Patent number: 4594903Abstract: A double tube sealed sampling device adapted to be incorporated into a dip tube for sampling the contents of a chemical reactor on a continuous or intermittent basis. In a preferred form, the device may be maintained in a sealed relationship to the reactor to avoid any contact with the contents of the reactor with the outside environment. In installed condition, the two tubes which are of relatively small diameter are shielded from turbulence within the reactor by the larger diameter hollow cylinder of the dip tube, thereby permitting the smaller diameter tubes to be formed from unreinforced polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) or similar material.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1984Date of Patent: June 17, 1986Assignee: Ethylene CorpInventor: Kirk B. Patent number: 4578170Abstract: A rapidly demountable structure for supporting electronic probes within a reactor vessel at the inner end of a dip tube element. The structure includes a fixed dip tube element which is permanently positioned in a recess at the inner end of the dip tube, and a probe supporting element selectively engaged with the dip tube element through a bayonet type interconnection. A damaged probe is replaced by first disconnecting the probe supporting element from the dip tube element, and disassembling the probe supporting element to permit removal and replacement of the probe. Means is provided to seal the opening to the reactor vessel during the period in which the probe supporting element is in disengaged condition thus affording safety to service personnel during replacement of the damaged probe.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1985Date of Patent: March 25, 1986Assignee: Ethylene Corp.Inventor: Michael Sheridan
