  • Patent number: 8377149
Abstract: A process for making a catalytic electrode, a process for making an electrochemical cell with a catalytic electrode, and an electrochemical cell made according to the process. The catalytic electrode has an active layer comprising a catalytic material, an electrically conductive material and a binder, and a gas diffusion layer including a material that is permeable to gas entering or escaping from the cell but essentially impermeable to electrolyte. The gas diffusion layer is adhered to the active layer by a patterned pressure bonding process to provide the catalytic electrode in which the entire gas diffusion area is adhered to the active layer, with areas of relatively high and relatively low adhesion. The electrode has a high overall bond strength, and the permeability of the gas diffusion layer remains high it has been adhered to the active layer to provide excellent high power capability.

  • Publication number: 20130034762
Abstract: A lithium/iron disulfide electrochemical battery cell with a high discharge capacity. The cell has a lithium negative electrode, an iron disulfide positive electrode and a nonaqueous electrolyte. The iron disulfide of the positive electrode has a controlled average particle size range which allows the electrochemical cells to exhibit desired properties in both low and high rate applications. In various embodiments, the iron disulfide particles are wet milled, preferably utilizing a media mill or milled utilizing a non-mechanical mill such as a jet mill, which reduces the iron disulfide particles to a desired average particle size range for incorporation into the positive electrode.

  • Publication number: 20130015197
Abstract: The invention is a button cell battery dispensing package (10) including a display card with front panel (12) and rear panel (30) and a flanged cover rotatably disposed with its flange (60) between the front and rear panels (1230). The cover (50) has blisters forming cavities (54) in which the batteries are disposed, with the blisters (56) protruding through an opening in the front panel. The cover (50) has one or more rearward projections (52) that can project into the cutouts (48) in the rear panel (30), to prevent free rotation of the cover (50) and hold a cavity in position adjacent to a battery access opening (36) to facilitate removal of a battery from the cavity (54). The cover (50) can be manually rotated by the user to sequentially index cavities into position adjacent to a battery access opening. The package (10) can include a door that can be closed to retain a cell in a cavity (54) adjacent to the battery access opening or opened to allow removal of the battery.

  • Publication number: 20130017459
Abstract: A gas generator includes a reactant capable of producing a gas and a gas outlet valve that can function as both a gas flow valve and a pressure relief vent, using the same gas flow path through the valve. When the valve is closed and the pressure within the gas generator is below a threshold pressure, a moveable valve member is biased against a valve seat to block the outlet port. When gas generator is coupled to the apparatus, an actuator is inserted into the valve, displacing the moveable valve member and separating it from the valve seat to open the valve. When the gas generator is uncoupled, pressure at or above a threshold displaces the moveable member, separating it from the valve seat to open the outlet port so pressure can be released to the external environment.
