  • Patent number: 6557331
Abstract: An operator control system for a self-propelled vehicle such as a lawn mower, wherein the control system includes two opposing and preferably upwardly extending and converging hand grips each having a corresponding drive control lever associated therewith. Each drive control lever may have at least a portion that is parallel to a grip axis of its respective hand grip. Further, each drive control lever may have a pivot axis that is substantially parallel to the corresponding grip axis such that the drive control lever remains substantially parallel to its respective hand grip throughout its travel. A neutral lock is provided to permit locking of each drive control lever in at least one position, e.g., a neutral position. Secondary levers such as operator presence control (OPC) levers may also be included. An OPC lever is associated with each hand grip.

  • Publication number: 20030000191
Abstract: Multiple belt mule drive apparatus and systems for use with ground maintenance vehicles are provided. The apparatus may include two endless belts each engageable with a drive sheave of a prime mover and a driven sheave of a cutting deck. Each drive belt may further contact a guide pulley and an idler pulley on a tension side and a slack side of the belt, respectively. In one embodiment, the drive sheave has an axis generally parallel to a longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Preferably, the guide pulley and the idler pulley associated with the first endless belt are, when the vehicle is in an operating configuration, located on a first side of a vertical plane passing through the drive sheave axis, while the guide pulley and idler pulley associated with the second endless belt are located on a second side.

Secondary levers such as operator presence control (OPC) levers may also be included.

  • Patent number: 4958484
Abstract: Vegetation cutting apparatus having a frontal housing deck overlies at least three rotary blade cutters arrayed leftwardly, medially, and rightwardly for simultaneously cutting a continuous transversely extending swath and centifugally discharging the cuttings through a central and rearwardly longitudinally extending cuttings chute. The vertical shaft for each horizontal rotary blade carries a sheave; a belt transmission means, emanating from a powered gearbox, drives the respective blade sheaves and also a reversing sheave, the latter ensuring that the arrayed rotary blades direct vegetation cuttings toward the central discharge chute. A novel spring-loaded device maintains constant tension upon the circuitous belt transmission means.

  • Patent number: 4941864
Abstract: Disclosed is a clutchable pulley system conventionally having an annular first-belt and an annular second-belt, both belts enveloping a plurally-grooved transfer pulley. Also in conventional fashion; the first-belt is constantly tightly trained with a power-source pulley and at least one primary-load pulley; and the second-belt is normally loosely enveloping the plurally-grooved transfer pulley and at lest one secondary-load pulley whereby the secondary-load pulley(s) will not rotate until the second-belt is made to tightly train with the transfer pulley. Departing from the prior art utilization of the idler-pulley principle for controllably tightly entraining the second-belt with the plurally-grooved and secondary-load pulleys, the herein disclosed clutchable pulley system supplants the second-belt idler-pulley by controllably moving the plurally-grooved transfer pulley along an arcuate path.

  • Patent number: 4878681
Abstract: Steering sulkies of the present invention are based upon the "crank/steering-rod" mechanical principle but provide profound refinements thereover. Cranking is provided at first and at second stations. At the first cranking station, preferably overlapping left-link and right-link effect simultaneous rotation of the two sulky wheels about their transversely separated vertical axes in response to towing vehicle steering; such first crank is contingently abuttable against blocking stops to prevent sulky jackknifing. The second crank, which is co-rotatable with the first crank, is connected to the rearward end of elongate steering-rod that herein intersects the frame longitudinal-axis before being terminally connected to a frontal hitch. A preferred hitch provides a convenient, reliable, and multi-directional flexural connection between a lawn-mower or other towing vehicle and the trailing self-steering sulky.
