Abstract: A method for producing products for separation, ion exchange or as basic material for the preparation of various derivatives designed for separation purposes and adsorption purposes by means of a polymer being activated with a reagent containing at least two bifunctional groups so that at least one of the reactive, functional groups in each molecule is bonded to the polymer while leaving a considerable amount of remaining groups unreacted but still reactive so that the activated polymer can be caused to react with thiosulphate after surplus reagent has been eliminated. The invention also relates to the produced products or their derivatives consisting of a water-soluble hydroxyl group or amino group containing polymer substituted with organic side-chains, each containing one or more thiosulphate groups or derivatives of such groups and the use of the products for purification of water, separation, immobilization of enzymes, etc.

Abstract: The invention concerns a gel product for chromatography based on agarose, and a method of using the product for hydrophobe salting out adsorption. The gel product is characterized in that the hydrophobe groups are bonded to the agarose with ether or esther binding, and that the hydrophobe groups can be composed of aliphatic hydrocarbons, halogen or hydroxy-substituted alkyl groups, with 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or contain 1 or more, up to 5, aromatic nuclei, unsubstituted or substituted with alkyl, alkyloxy, halogen or NO.sub.2 or have the formula ##EQU1## where R can be alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, aralkoxy, alkaryl, optionally substituted with hydroxy, halogen or nitro, and where the alkyl parts of R contain 1 to 20 carbon atoms.

Abstract: The present invention relates to agar products for separation purposes, e.g. in biochemistry, and a method for preparing such a product. The product is chiefly characterized in that the agar or gel forming fractions prepared from agar is preferably bead-shaped and is made by cross-linking to be practically completely insoluble in water and strong alkali and, if desired, is also made practically sulfate-free by wholly or partially freeing it of carboxyl ions giving it a very small capacity to adsorb basic matter. If desired, it can also be coupled to an enzyme or protein component. The method is basically characterized by treating the agar- or agarose particles in an aqueous slurry with e.g. epihydrin or similar substances whereby the reagent can, if desired, be dissolved in an organic solvent and the reaction is carried out in an alkaline milieu in the absence of oxygen and/or, if desired, in the presence of strongly reducing matter.
