  • Publication number: 20130131676
Abstract: An articulation element consisting of a plurality of adjustable jaw pairs for the purposes of fixating the relative position of coupled bars and for bone pins of an external bone fixator. Each of the adjustable jaws consists of a pair of hemispherical jaw elements contained within a spherical housing. A passage is eccentrically arranged through the jaw elements to accept the pin or bar. The jaw elements have interposed between them a spring element that serves to bias the jaw elements in the closed position. Pins serve to provisionally lock the jaw elements in the closed position. Spring loaded buttons act to release the pins thereby allowing the jaw elements to open accepting the pin or bar. The jaws are attached in a back to back fashion through the use of a threaded collar which acts as a turnbuckle pulling the jaws together when tightened.

  • Publication number: 20120296335
Abstract: An external fixation clamp for receiving a fixation element includes an inner jaw and an outer jaw movable between an open position that permits the fixation element to be placed between the inner and outer jaws and a closed position that restricts removal of the fixation element from between the inner and outer jaws. A latch assembly may cooperate with the inner and outer jaws to secure the jaws in a closed position. The latch assembly may comprise a latch and a latch biasing member. The latch may be configured to translate linearly relative to one of the inner and outer jaws, and the latch biasing member may have a first higher level of stored energy when the inner and outer jaws are in the open position and a second lower level of stored energy when the inner and outer jaws are in the closed position.

  • Publication number: 20120289959
Abstract: An external fixation system includes a clamp system configured to capture a fixation element. The clamp system has a first and a second jaw and a first and a second link attached to the first and second jaws that are configured to control the motion of the jaws. The links are arranged such that, when the first and second jaws are moved to a closed position, the action of trying to open the jaws is resisted by the position of the links, and to open the jaws, the links must be actuated.

  • Patent number: 8241285
Abstract: Clamping devices and methods for external fixation systems include a post component having a yaw axis and a clamping system secured to the post component and rotatable about the yaw axis. The clamping system includes a outer jaw and a inner jaw having an inner surface facing the outer jaw. The outer and inner jaws together form an opening for receiving a fixation element of the external fixation system. The inner jaw and outer jaw have a roll axis alignable with a longitudinal axis of the fixation element. The clamping system and post component are rotatable about the roll axis. The inner jaw also includes a cylindrical outer-facing surface. The devices also include a base component having a cylindrical concave surface having a pitch axis. The concave surface of the base component interfaces with the cylindrical outer facing component on the inner jaw. The outer and inner jaws being rotatable relative to the base and the post component about the pitch axis.

  • Publication number: 20120150185
Abstract: A clamp assembly includes a first jaw and a second jaw cooperatively positioned to receive the fixation element. A gate is displaceable relative to the first jaw and moveable between an open condition where the gate and the first jaw form an opening of a first size allowing introduction of the fixation element between the first and second jaws and a locking condition where the opening formed by the gate and the first jaw has a second size that prevents removal of the fixation element out from between the first and second jaws.

  • Publication number: 20120150184
Abstract: A clamp includes an opening structurally arranged to receive a fixation element with a cam driven jaw. The clamping assembly includes a first jaw and a second jaw disposed relative to the first jaw. The first and second jaws may be cooperatively positioned to receive the fixation element. A sliding cam is configured to displace relative the first and second jaws. The sliding cam may be associated with the first and second jaws to force the first jaw to vertically displace relative to the second jaw. In one aspect, the sliding cam is structured to vertically displace the first jaw enough to permit an external fixation element to be received between the first and second jaws.

  • Publication number: 20120089142
Abstract: A clamping device for an external fixation system includes a post component having a yaw axis, a first clamp secured to the post component and rotatable about the yaw axis, and a second clamp secured to the post component and rotatable about the yaw axis relative to the first clamp. The device includes a tightening component configured in a manner that an action of tightening the tightening component simultaneously locks both the first and second clamps in a gripping arrangement and substantially eliminates their relative rotation about the yaw axis. Interdigitating components can be spaced apart by high spring rate biasing elements that so as to allow for smooth adjustment of the clamping device components relative to each other until the appropriate position is achieved and until after a sufficiently high clamping load has been applied.

Abstract: A method for determining the proper configuration of a fixator or other medical device to correct a given deformity by solving the simultaneous equations representing the kinematic chain for the device. One skilled in the art would appreciate that x-rays, clinical evaluations, or a combination of both may be used to determine the distal and proximal mounting characteristics, including the use of digital x-rays with images from an imaging device to reduce or eliminate the needs for a physician to take measurements. The technique can be expanded to other medical evaluations. Additionally, one skilled in the art would appreciate that the method of the present invention could be written as one or more sets of instructions stored on a computer-readable medium that could be executed by a computer.

  • Publication number: 20100087819
Abstract: The present disclosure provides methods, systems, and computer program product for treating a fractured bone using a hexapod manipulator. The hexapod manipulator has a first ring and a second ring, with the first and second rings being connected by six telescopic struts. The method includes the steps of determining a current position of the second ring relative to the first ring; determining a desired position of the second ring relative to the first ring; and computing with a processing system the difference between the current position and the desired position of the second ring relative to the first ring using a linear approach to a nonlinear problem.
