Patents Assigned to ExxonMobile Research and Engineering Company
  • Patent number: 6662116
Abstract: A method for determining a property of an unknown material including the steps of determining the IR spectrum of the unknown material, fitting the IR spectrum to a linear combination of known spectra in a database, wherein a database includes spectra of reference materials whose assay properties are known, and determining the property of the unknown material from the assay properties of the reference materials.

  • Patent number: 6632350
Abstract: A hydrocarbonaceous feed is hydroprocessed in a single vessel containing two reaction stages and a stripping stage. The feed is fed into the first reaction stage to produce a vapor and liquid effluent which are separated, and the liquid stripped. The stripped liquid is passed as feed into the second stage, in which it meets with fresh hydrogen to produce a hydroprocessed liquid product and a hydrogen-rich vapor. The vapor is passed into the first stage, to provide the hydrogen for that stage. The use of a single vessel provides an efficient and economical addition to, or replacement for, a vessel for an existing hydroprocessing facility.

  • Patent number: 6506297
Abstract: Discloses novel biodegradable high performance hydrocarbon base oils useful as lubricants in engine oil and industrial compositions, and process for their manufacture. A waxy, or paraffinic feed, particularly a Fischer-Tropsch wax, is reacted over a dual function catalyst to produce hydroisomerization and hydrocracking reactions, at 700° F.+ conversion levels ranging from about 20 to 50 wt. %, preferably about 25-40 wt. %, sufficient to produce a crude fraction, e.g., a C5-1050° F.+ crude fraction, containing 700° F.+ isoparaffins having from about 6.0 to about 7.5 methyl branches per 100 carbon atoms in the molecule. The methyl paraffins containing crude fraction is topped via atmospheric distillation to produce a bottoms fraction having an initial boiling point between about 650° F. and 750° F. which is then solvent dewaxed, and the dewaxed oil is then fractionated under high vacuum to produce biodegradable high performance hydrocarbon base oils.

  • Patent number: 6479425
Abstract: The invention provides a novel metal complex which, when used with an activating cocatalyst, provides a novel catalyst composition. The invention also provides a polymerization method which utilizes the catalyst composition to produce polymers and copolymers containing polar monomer groups. More specifically, the invention comprises a composition comprising the formula LMXZn wherein X is selected from the group consisting of halides, hydride, triflate, acetates, borates, C1 through C12 alkyl, C1 through C12 alkoxy, C3 through C12 cycloalkyl, C3 through C12 cycloalkoxy, aryl, thiolates, carbon monoxide, cyanate, olefins, and any other moiety into which a monomer can insert. M is selected from the group consisting of Cu, Ag, and Au. L is a nitrogen-containing bidentate ligand having more than two nitrogen atoms. Z is a neutral coordinating ligand and n equals 0, 1, or 2.

  • Patent number: 6407299
Abstract: The present invention is a two-component catalyst system comprising (a) an alkyl magnesium (MgR2) component and (b) a Lewis acid component. The catalyst system is used for catalyzing the oligomerization and polymerization of ethylene and/or &agr;-olefins to form homopolymers and copolymers. The products range from highly linear, high molecular weight, solid polymers to highly branched, lower molecular weight oils.

  • Patent number: 6388018
Abstract: Graft copolymers having cationic units pendant to the backbone chain are disclosed. These polymers are prepared by reacting a polymer containing halogenated para-methylstyrene units in the chain, e.g., a brominated copolymer of isobutylene and para-methylstyrene, with an anionically polymerized polymer made using an organolithium initiator compound having the formula R1 R2 Z R3—Li where R1 and R2 are alkyl radicals, R3 is a direct link or an organic radical and Z is nitrogen or phosphorous. Reaction of the anionically polymerized polymer having an R1 R2 Z R3— end group with the halogenated polymer leads to graft polymers coupled by a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium groups.
