Publication number: 20190293844Abstract: A particularly-formed multi-layer micron-sized particle is provided that is substantially transparent, yet that exhibits selectable coloration based on its physical properties. The disclosed physical properties of the particle are controllably selectable refractive indices to provide an opaque-appearing energy transmissive material when pluralities of the particles are suspended in a substantially transparent matrix material. Multiply-layered (up to 30+ constituent layers) particles result in an overall particle diameter of less than 5 microns. The material suspensions render the particles deliverable as aspirated or aerosol compositions onto substrates to form layers that selectively scatter specific wavelengths of electromagnetic energy while allowing remaining wavelengths of the incident energy to pass.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 1, 2019Publication date: September 26, 2019Applicant: FACE INTERNATIONAL CORPORATIONInventors: Clark D. Patent number: 10347777Abstract: A method is provided that integrates an autonomous energy harvesting capacity in vehicles in an aesthetically neutral manner. A unique set of structural features combine to implement a hidden energy harvesting system on a surface of the vehicle to provide electrical power to the vehicle, and/or to electrically-powered devices in the vehicle. Color-matched, image-matched and/or texture-matched optical layers are formed over energy harvesting components, including photovoltaic energy collecting components. Optical layers are tuned to scatter selectable wavelengths of electromagnetic energy back in an incident direction while allowing remaining wavelengths of electromagnetic energy to pass through the layers to the energy collecting components below.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 2017Date of Patent: July 9, 2019Assignee: Face International CorporationInventors: Clark D Boyd, Bradbury R Face, Jeffrey D Shepard

Patent number: 9726791Abstract: A system and method are provided for forming body structures including energy filters/shutter components, including energy/light directing/scattering layers that are actively electrically switchable. The filters or components are operable between at least a first mode in which the layers, and thus the presentation of the shutter components, appear substantially transparent when viewed from an energy/light incident side, and a second mode in which the layers, and thus the presentation of the energy filters or shutter components, appear opaque to the incident energy impinging on the energy incident side. The differing modes are selectable by electrically energizing, differentially energizing and/or de-energizing electric fields in a vicinity of the energy scattering layers, including electric fields generated between a pair of transparent electrodes sandwiching an energy scattering layer.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 2016Date of Patent: August 8, 2017Assignee: Face International CorporationInventors: Clark D Boyd, Bradbury R Face, Jeffrey D Shepard

Patent number: 6079214Abstract: A standing wave pump in which a standing compression wave is produced by a pair of diametrically opposing transducers. The vibrating surfaces of the transducers are oscillated at a frequency sufficient to generate a substantially cylindrical compression wave having substantially planar wave fronts between the transducer pair. The length of pump housing is made to be equal to an integer times half the wavelength of the compression wave and the pump housing acts as a resonant cavity having a standing wave pattern set up in it. Waves are simultaneously produced and reflected by the oscillating surface and are superimposed upon one another and travel to the opposing oscillating surface where this process is repeated, substantially multiplying the intensity of the standing compression wave, which provides a stored-energy effect.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1998Date of Patent: June 27, 2000Assignee: Face International CorporationInventor: Richard Patten Bishop

Patent number: 6052300Abstract: DC-AC voltage transformation circuits are provided which use a resonating piezoelectric transformer along with complementary circuit components, to efficiently convert a DC first voltage to a transformer-output AC second voltage. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, A High Displacement Piezoelectric (HDP) transformer achieves sufficiently high voltage output to "cold fire" a gas discharge lamp. The disclosed circuit may be modified using conventional electrical sub-circuitry to pre-heat the cathodes of the lamp. The transformer circuit may be a "self resonating" circuit which relies on an initial pulse from turning on the DC power supply to cause the transformer to begin resonating. In a modified voltage converter circuit, the circuit is not "self resonating" and instead has a phase shift oscillator sub-circuit that provides small pulse signals to start the transformer resonating when the circuit is initially turned on.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1999Date of Patent: April 18, 2000Assignee: Face International CorporationInventors: Richard Patten Bishop, Clark Davis Boyd

Patent number: 6042345Abstract: A piezoelectrically actuated fluid pump including a pump housing, a pump chamber, inlet and outlet ports for communicating the pump chamber with the exterior of the pump housing, valving means for opening and closing the ports, two pre-stressed piezoelectric diaphragm members which are self-actuated, and energizing means is provided. The diaphragm members include a prestressed piezoelectric element which is durable, inexpensive and lightweight as compared with diaphragm members of prior diaphragm pumps of comparable discharge capacity, and is actuated via electrical signals from an outside power source. No exterior mechanical means for driving the diaphragm members is necessary. A modification is disclosed in which a central computer independently controls the phase angle of oscillation of the two diaphragm members, providing precise flow rate control.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 1998Date of Patent: March 28, 2000Assignee: Face International CorporationInventors: Richard P Bishop, Bradbury R. Patent number: RE46499Abstract: A self-powered switching device using a prestressed flextensional electroactive member generates a signal for activation of a latching relay. The electroactive member has a piezoelectric element with a convex and a concave face that may be compressed to generate an electrical pulse. The flextensional electroactive member and associated signal generation circuitry can be hardwired directly to the latching relay or may be coupled to a transmitter for sending an RF signal to a receiver which actuates the latching relay.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2009Date of Patent: August 1, 2017Assignee: Face International CorporationInventors: Bradbury R.
