    Abstract: In a method for making a substrate for a digital versatile disc, a stamper having a front side with a pitted surface, a back side, and a central opening is first provided. The central opening is defined by a surface having an edge on the front side and an edge on the back side. A burr is formed on the edge of the surface on the front side of the stamper, e.g., by punching the central hole from the back side of the stamper. The stamper is then disposed within a mold such that the front side faces the mold cavity. Thereafter, the substrate is molded in the mold. In the molding process, the burr on the front side of the stamper forms a rounded edge in one of the walls defining an annular groove in the substrate. This rounded edge enables substrates to be bonded together with an extremely thin layer of adhesive material without the centering and alignment problems caused by burrs.

    Abstract: A blind fastener with an improved drive nut and assembly process. The blind fastener of the present invention includes a screw, a sleeve, a nut, and a drive nut. The new drive nut of this invention has protruding nibs that mate precisely with a driving recess located in the nut head. The protruding nibs of the new drive nut are not deformable and serve to replace the deformable annular ridge that was used in previous drive nut assemblies. The configuration of the protruding nibs and the recess in the nut head can be of many forms, so long as both parts are capable of being mated. Once the new assembly process for the blind fastener has been completed, the drive nut will have been mated with the nut head to prevent any rotation of the nut during installation of the blind fastener. The assembly process will now include placing the sleeve over the threads of the screw to a position adjacent the screw head.

    Abstract: A tool which has the capability of removing the nut from both large and small nut plate assemblies. The tool comprises a handle having a removal nose portion at one end, the nose portion having an upper jaw portion separated from a lower jaw portion by an opening. The upper jaw portion is used to pry open the nut plate cage and the lower jaw portion pushes and lifts the nut from the cage. The space between the two jaw portions enables a pivoting action around the pried open cage wall.

    Abstract: An improved fastener system includes a threaded pin and a tool. The pin contains a recess in a threaded end of the pin for receiving the tool, thus holding the pin against rotation during application of a nut on the pin. The recess includes splines extending around a circumference of the recess. A plurality of mating splines are located on an end of the tool for engaging the slots of the recess. The splines are oriented to maximize torsional performance and to balance the shear strength of the pin with the shear strength of the tool. Additionally the ends of the recess splines and a minor diameter of the tool include a matching curved surface to increase torsional strength.

    Abstract: A blind fastener for compressively connecting at least two overlapping workpieces including a threaded core bolt and a pull-up nut at least partially positioned within an aperture of a hollow bolt. The nut includes a larger diameter portion and a smaller diameter portion. The hollow bolt is sized to be received within aligned apertures in the workpieces and includes an enlarged head portion and a body portion extending from the head portion. The core bolt and the smaller diameter portion of the nut are positioned in the aperture in the hollow bolt such that when the core bolt is rotated with respect to the nut the larger diameter portion of the nut disrupts the body portion of the hollow bolt and the smaller diameter portion of the nut fills the space between the core bolt and the disrupted body portion of the hollow bolt to increase the shear and tensile load capabilities of the fastener.

    Abstract: A blind bolt assembly for compressively connecting at least two overlapping workpieces having a hollow bolt sized to be received within aligned aperture in the workpieces. The hollow bolt includes an enlarged head portion, a grip section extending from the head portion and reduced diameter externally threaded end portion extending from the grip section. An angled ramp section extends along the hollow bolt between the grip section and the threaded end portion. A core bolt having an elongated shaft is positioned within a cylindrical hole in the hollow bolt and includes a drive head extending outside of the hollow bolt. The blind bolt assembly includes a cylindrical collar having an internally threaded section for threadable receipt of the threaded end portion of the hollow bolt and a drive section for receipt of the drive portion of the core bolt. The drive portion of the core bolt and the drive section of the collar preferably include mating splines.

    Abstract: A fastener system including a blind grounding stud and a sleeve. The sleeve has a first section abutting a second section. The first section has a smaller outer surface diameter than the second section. A knurled band is formed around the first section beginning at the intersection between the first and second sections. The sleeve has an opening axially through the two sections. The opening has a first larger inner surface which tapers via a frusto-conical surface to a smaller diameter inner surface. The larger diameter inner surface extends from the free end of the sleeve first section and extends toward the second section to the frusto-conical surface. The smaller diameter inner surface begins at the free end of the second section and extends toward the first section to the frusto-conical inner surface. The smaller diameter inner surface spans at least a portion and preferably all of the knurled band.

When sufficient resistance to threading occurs, the driver deforms the lobes of the collar radially inward toward the axis of the collar. Material of the collar positioned internally from the lobes responds to deformation of the lobes and flows radially inward into the flutes of the pin to lock the collar, pin, and work piece together. The driver then rotates freely, and a joint has been made with a predetermined axial load thereby locking the component parts together.

    Abstract: A tool which has the capability of removing the nut from both large and small nut plate assemblies, the tool also including a portion for installing a nut into the plate assembly cage. The tool comprises a handle having a removal nose portion at one end and a threaded shaft portion for receiving a reinstallation socket at the other end. In a preferred embodiment, the portion of the handle incorporating the removal nose portion is angled with respect to the remaining portion of the handle. The reinstallation socket has a threaded aperture for receiving the thread shaft portion, therefor securing the socket to the tool. The nose portion has an upper jaw portion separated from a lower jaw portion by an opening. The upper jaw portion is used to pry open the nut plate cage and the lower jaw portion pushes and lifts the nut from the cage. The space between the two jaw portions enables a pivoting action around the pried open cage wall.

The shank portion includes a gripping portion having a plurality of gripping surfaces formed between a plurality of cone shaped grooves, the configuration of the gripping portion being spiral shaped. The collar is installed by first positioning it over the fastener shank portion, an installation tool then swaging the collar thereto, the collar being tightly held by the multiple gripping surfaces to prevent movement in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the fastener. A mating spiral shaped configuration is formed along the interior surface of the collar during the swaging process.

    Abstract: An improved printed circuit board wedge assembly having a center segment with sloped surfaces at its opposite ends and two end wedge segments having surfaces that abut against opposite ends of the center wedge segment. A drive shaft has a first ratchet member at one end, the first ratchet member engaging a second ratchet member having an elongated hex shaped member extending therefrom. The hex member is adapted to slide in a hex socket formed in an adjacent sleeve member. The drive shaft, having a threaded portion, extends lengthwise through a channel in the center wedge segment and connects together the two end wedge segments. A retaining ring is provided for captivating the driver portion of the assembly to the wedge segments. When the drive shaft is rotated in one direction, the two end wedge segments, together with the shaft, move transversely to the center wedge segment to fasten the PCB in place. The hexagonal shaped member transmits torque from an external drive to the first ratchet member.

    Abstract: There is disclosed an improvement in rotational wrenching tools used in the aerospace industry to apply a fastener nut to a fastener pin at a limiting, preload torsion. The pins used for the fasteners have an end recess which receives a rotational stationary key that is supported in the tool by a key holder which is slidably received in a central passage of the rotationally driven socket sleeve of the tool. This invention provides a first rotational detent at the forward end of the key holder and the central through passage and a first spring to bias the key holder axially forward into engagement with said first rotational detent to cause the key holder to rotate with the sleeve and thereby facilitate engagement and disengagement of the key with the fasteners. The invention also provides a second rotational detent at the rear end of the key holder and the housing to rotationally immobilize said key holder during run-up of the fastener nuts on the fastener pins.
