  • Patent number: 9401587
Abstract: A method for producing a spark plug for internal combustion engines, having a metallic shell, a ceramic insulator held in the shell, a center electrode embedded in the insulator, and a ground electrode implemented as a bridge attached to the front end of the shell, wherein an end piece made of a precious metal is attached to the front end of the center electrode and a counterpart is attached to the bridge opposite the end piece, between which is formed a spark gap. A cylindrical body made fully or partially of the precious metal or precious metal alloy intended for the end piece and that is longer than the end piece is welded onto the front end of the center electrode. A bridge is used that has, in the center, a hole, the cross-section of which is matched to the cross-section of the cylindrical body. The bridge is placed on the front end of the shell in such a manner that the forward-facing end of the cylindrical body enters the hole in the bridge.

  • Patent number: 9083154
Abstract: A spark plug having a spark plug body, a center electrode, and a rod-shaped ground electrode that is attached to a front end of the spark plug body and has an electrode end section with an end surface and two side surfaces. The electrode end section is provided with a step onto which is attached a precious metal component with an ignition surface that, together with the center electrode, forms a spark air gap. The step formed in the electrode end section and the precious metal component attached thereto extend across the entire width (B) of the electrode end section so that the precious metal component is flush with the electrode end section on the two sides surfaces, as well as the end surface.

  • Patent number: 8981634
Abstract: A spark plug with a particular configuration, particularly in the area of a gasket that seals between a shell and insulator, increases the mechanical strength of the spark plug and helps prevent breaking, cracking and/or other failures in the insulator. The spark plug is designed such that the shell, insulator and gasket, which may be in the form of a sleeve-like cylindrical gasket or a ring-like annular gasket, work together to provide better support for the insulator against axial and/or radial stresses. This improved support can offset certain stresses, such as radial stress RS that can be exerted against the insulator core nose when the engine experiences knocking or misfiring.

  • Patent number: 8890396
Abstract: The invention relates to a spark plug for a gas-fired internal combustion engine, and Includes a metallic body, with an insulator fastened in the body. A central electrode, leads through the insulator and includes a protruding end of a precious metal alloy. An annular ground electrode is fastened to the body and surrounds the end of the central electrode which, at the inside thereof facing the central electrode is provided with a precious metal or with a precious metal alloy. The mutually facing surfaces of the central electrode and ground electrode formed by the precious metal or the precious metal alloy are coaxially disposed cylinder surfaces. A cap is provided and attached to the body and which, after installation of the spark plug into a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine, shields the central electrode and the ground electrode from the combustion chamber.

  • Patent number: 8680757
Abstract: A method for producing a spark plug which contains an inner conductor, an insulator surrounding the inner conductor, a spark plug body surrounding the insulator, and two electrodes forming an ignition gap. The first electrode is a center electrode connected to the inner conductor in an electrically conducting manner and the second electrode is a ground electrode connected to the spark plug body in an electrically conducting manner. An iridium component which contains more than 95 percent by weight of iridium is welded onto one of the electrodes. An iridium component that is punched out of an iridium sheet and has a thickness that is less in size than its diameter is also employed.

  • Patent number: 8610342
Abstract: The invention describes a spark plug, which comprises an inner conductor, an insulator enclosing the inner conductor, a spark plug body enclosing the insulator and two electrodes forming a spark gap. The first electrode is a center electrode connected to the inner conductor in an electrically conductive manner and the second electrode is a ground electrode connected to the spark plug body in an electrically conductive manner. At least one of the electrodes has a precious metal region, adjoining the spark gap and consisting predominantly of platinum, iridium or an alloy of both and containing additionally at least one brittle metal. The precious metal region consists of a base material predominantly containing platinum and/or iridium, which comprises a coating with a brittle metal, which is more brittle than the base material.
