    Abstract: A spoolable composite tube capable of being spooled onto a reel for storage and for use in oil field applications. The spoolable tube exhibits unique anistropic characteristics that provide improved burst and collapse pressures, increased tensile strength, compression strength, and load carrying capacity, while still remaining sufficiently bendable to be spooled onto a reel in an open bore configuration. The spoolable composite tube can include an inner liner, an interface layer, fiber composite layers, a pressure barrier layer, and an outer protective layer. The fiber composite layers can have a unique triaxial braid structure.

    Abstract: A connector is disclosed for use with composite spoolable pipe such as for use in well logging and workover operations in oil wells. The pipe which is spoolable is comprised of an outer composite structure containing several plies of high strength and stiffness fibers embedded in a resin material such as epoxy. The fibers are oriented to resist internal and external pressure and provide low bending stiffness. Fibers of high strength and modulus are embedded and bonded into a matrix that keeps the fibers in position, acts as a load transfer medium and protects the fibers from environmental damage. The plastic binder in which the fibers are embedded to form the matrix will have a modulus of elasticity (hereinafter modulus) that exceeds 100,000 psi. Typically, a liner may be employed in the pipe to serve as a structural member, one function of which is pressure containment to resist leakage of internal fluids within the tubing.

    Abstract: In the use of composite materials for a coiled tubing for downhole use, precise external tubular dimension and durable wear surface become a critical factor because of the potential for damage to the external surface as the tubing passes through the stripper assembly at the wellhead which is provided to control high pressures within the well. An infuser arranged within the stripper provides lubrication for the passage of the composite tubing through the sealing members within the stripper and also infuses fluids into microfissures and cracks naturally occurring on the surface of the composite tubing to fill the voids and thereby enhance the structural integrity of the tubing.

    Abstract: A composite tubular member having an outer generally cylindrical member containing fibers oriented to resist internal and external pressure and provide low bending stiffness, and two inner areas of axial reinforcement located near the neutral axis of the composite tubular members containing fibers oriented to provide high axial stiffness, high tensile strength and low bending stiffness; and fibers oriented to resist shear stress, positioned opposite each other within the walls of the outer member. These inner areas define a minor moment of inertia of bending extending diametrically through said inner areas and a major moment of inertia of bending generally orthogonal to said minor moment of inertia. Energy conductors integral to the tubular member are arranged in a plane along the minor moment of inertia formed in the tubular member.
