Abstract: A unitary carton has two compartments. A first of the two compartments can be closed and sealed while the other compartment can be temporarily closed. This way a manufacturer can insert a product into the first compartment, then close and seal that compartment and ship the carton to a distributor. The distributor can open the temporarily closed compartment and add a second product selected by a customer. The carton is then shipped to the retailer or consumer with the two products in it. In the described example, the first product is a pillow, and the second product is a cover which can be combined with the pillow to form a pet bed. The pillow is placed in a plastic bag and a vacuum is drawn to reduce the size of the pillow so that it fits snuggly in its compartment. The pet bed packaged and assembled in this manner permits the distributor to substantially reduce its inventory space requirements.

  • Patent number: 5509373
Abstract: A pet perch for attachment to a window sill or other support surface has a generally rectangular frame defining a central opening, and a jacket for encasing the frame and covering the opening to provide a soft, hammock-like pet resting area. The jacket may be a drawstring cover which can be attached or removed without disturbing the frame and mounting bracket or removing the perch from the window sill. A pair of adjustable brackets secures the frame to the window sill. Pegs in the brackets are inserted into keyholes in the frame to fasten the frame and brackets together. The holes in the frame provide alternative fastening locations, so that the perch can be used with different depth window sills. In addition, the frame may be secured to the window sill by using hook and loop fasteners on the sill and the frame and/or by using screws or the like.

  • Patent number: 4843666
Abstract: A mattress designed to prevent bedsores is made from an open foamed plastic box enclosing pillows filled with stuffing in a cushion cavity. This construction is enclosed in a zippered mattress cover, which may be waterproof. The pillows can be separate or joined together to form a compartmentalized pillow cushion. The pillow cushion can be made from a pillow bag stuffed with textile fiber or foamed plastic particles and divided into compartments by seams. Separately formed pillows may be left loose within the cushion cavity, or detachably joined together. The mattres can have pillows of different density stuffing or sizes the seams being transverse and compartmentalizing the pillow bag; and reclosable closure means in at least one of the seams for easily reopening and reclosing it, whereby the stuffing in the compartment accessed by the closure means may be adjusted.

  • Patent number: 4525409
Abstract: A process for making a fabric is used to produce bedding especially well suited for hospitals, nursing homes, jails, mental institutions, and the like. The process begins with a tightly woven taffeta or ripstop weave cloth made from fine nylon or polyester threads. First, one surface of the taffeta is coated with a urethane water repellent. Next, the partially finished product is treated by immersion in a bacteriostatic and fungistatic, a fire retardant, and an anti-static bath. The cloth is then cut and sewn into a desired, at least partially, finished product, such as a pillow cover or mattress ticking and can be vented as desired.
