Abstract: There is provided a method of and apparatus for packing rod-shaped articles, especially cigarettes. A rotatable turret is used, into which blanks are introduced into pockets of the turret, with partial folding of the blanks, whereafter groups of articles are axially introduced into the blanks in pockets, the article groups being introduced alternately from opposite sides of the turret. There is also provided an apparatus whereby article groups can be ejected alternately on both sides of a magazine and also an apparatus wherein, to form article groups from three article rows or layers, the middle row containing fewer cigarettes than the top and bottom rows, a lateral chute wall of the magazine terminates above the region of the cigarette groups to be ejected, merely articles of the top and bottom rows being ejectable in this region via a recess in the entraining member associated with the lateral chute, such recess being at the height of the middle cigarette row.

Abstract: Apparatus for producing discrete blanks from a web of foil or the like is provided, in which the foil or the like are given continuous constrained guidance during the phase between separation of the web until transfer to a packet or packing machine. The web is transported into the system between a first pair of pulling rollers then transferred to a conveyor of two spaced belts. The belts are provided with a series of apertures through which a suction is pulled to hold the transported web. The belts diverge slightly and pull the web at a higher speed than the first pair of rollers so that the web is stretched both lengthwise and transversely. Severance from the web is carried out in at least one initial cut, followed by a main cut, during continuous constrained guidance.

Abstract: A web 26 of packaging material on which a plurality of cigarette wrapper blanks 10 are defined in oppositely rotated and laterally displaced pairs, is fed between a reciprocatable punch 38 and a fixed support 36 having cooperating cutting edges 39 and counter edges 40, respectively, whereby the downward movement of the punch severs a pair of blanks from the web. The continued downward movement of the punch separates the two blanks of the severed pair through the cooperation of a further cutting edge 45 on the punch and a counter edge 46 on a turntable 41 disposed beneath the fixed support. The turntable is then rotated 180.degree. to successively feed the separated blanks to a suction conveyor 47.

Abstract: An apparatus for making and filling a hinged box of a foldable material, more particularly cardboard, especially a hinged box for cigarettes, which box comprises a blank with front, rear and end walls, side walls formed from lateral flaps and a hinged lid. The end wall and front wall and the lateral flaps thereof are first simultaneously folded by movement of the blank in relation to folding tools into a position perpendicular to the rear wall and part of the blank adjoining the rear wall and thereafter further foldings are performed by the movement of folding tools in relation to the already partially folded blank.

The body of the package is provided on the outside with a moisture and odor (aroma) tight coating and, at least at the upper edge, a strip of inside tin foil wrapping is attached for the formation of a front fold. The arrangement simplifies the package blank and results in a finished package having an overall metal coating.

Abstract: An apparatus for thermal sealing and bonding the ends of foil wrapped cigarette packages includes a conveyor for transporting a stack of packages through a heat sealing station having heat sealing units arranged on opposite sides of the path of travel of the conveyor for simultaneously heat sealing the ends of the packages. Each heat sealing unit includes a plurality of thin superposed spaced heating strips equal in number to the packages in the stack and mounted in a housing for unitary movement into contact with the ends of the stacked packages. The strips have a low thermal inertia and are made of a metal having a high heat conductivity. The housing encloses a plurality of infrared radiators, one for each strip, spaced from the side of the strips opposite the side of adapted to contact the package ends for heating the strips by radiant heat in a contact free manner.

Abstract: The invention relates to an arrangement of generally longitudinal blanks from which hinged lid boxes for cigarettes or the like are manufactured. The blanks are defined on an elongated web of packaging material such as cardboard or the like, and are arranged in an inter-connected fashion such that very little if any of the material on the web is wasted, and waste material between adjacent blanks is eliminated.

Abstract: An apparatus is provided for folding and sealing the longitudinal end flaps of cigarette packs. The folding is performed by means including a rotating turret having a number of radially external pockets each adapted to receive a pack. The pocket axes extend parallel to the turret axis and the pockets are open at their ends, where the end flaps which project in the intermediate folding position project out of the pocket. Folding and sealing shoes are associated with each pocket and are mounted on both sides of the turret for both radial and axial movement. Due to this movement the folding and sealing shoes first fold inwardly the longitudinal end flap--which is positioned radially inwardly relative the turret axis and which has a closure strip, in such a manner that the closure strip engages with the inside of the opposing longitudinal end flap.

Abstract: An oblong pack for holding contents conforming to the pack configuration consists of a folded blank defining opposed sidewalls and end walls with the end walls comprising end flaps folded against the contents end face. The pack is characterized by the end flaps being of unequal length, only a portion of the end flaps of opposite sidewalls covering one another in the folded condition, and the blank having a tooth engagement of the end flaps with adjacent blanks so it may be parted substantially free from waste from a web.

Abstract: A device for profiling and shaping cuboid-shaped packages having blank parts fastened by gluing. Shaping chambers are disposed on a heated turret to enclose the packs until the glue sets. The shaping chambers have dimensions nearly corresponding to the desired shape of the packages. A wedge-shaped member is used with the shaping chambers to define profiling surfaces for delimiting the chamber. The turret is heated by circular heating bands located on opposite annular sides of the shaping chambers.

Abstract: Apparatus for wrapping a stack of cigarette packs in a carton blank includes means for severing a blank from a supply web fed to the apparatus in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the stack, vacuum suction means for holding the severed blank and rotating it until its longitudinal axis is aligned with that of the stack, and slider means for pushing the stack off of its feed conveyor, against the blank, and into the opening of a mouthpiece, whereby the blank is U-wrapped around the stack.

Abstract: A unitary, tin foil blank is folded around two separate and adjacent cigarette blocks to form parting folds which extend through the tin foil blank between the cigarette blocks and physically separate the blocks from one another. Thus, the tin foil blank forms the inner wrapping for the cigarette blocks and consists of a common, one-part blank.

This type of package has an outer shell and an inner sliding drawer, with the drawer having a center section with two upwardly folded bridges attached on opposite sides to the center section and cover flaps attached on the two orthogonal opposite sides. The sliding drawer itself is composed from two partial blanks, one of which has the bridge elements and the other the cover flaps. The blanks are cut from a single web without any waste material.

Abstract: Air under pressure is selectively injected into raisable hollow members made of foldable material forming engagement means for movable belts which define conveying and storing elements for streams of cigarettes or the like between cigarette producing machines and packaging machines, the deflating of the hollow member acting to shift the belts from conveying function to storing function.

Abstract: A machine for testing the presence and/or packing of cigarettes (11) in a group (10) comprises a housing 16 mounting a plurality of spring biased, axially displaceable tappets (13), (14) and (15) arranged in rows corresponding to the cigarette group alignment. Each row of recesses (25) for the tappet control heads (22) is provided with a pair of linear control ducts (27), (40); (28), (41); (29), (42) axially displaced relative to the tappets. If a tappet is fully displaced by engagement with an acceptable cigarette the inner duct (27), (28) or (29) will be opened and the outer duct (40), (41) or (42) blocked, and the full spring return of a displaced tappet will open the outer duct and block the inner duct. The partial return of a tappet, as a result of particle jamming, will leave both ducts blocked, however, and generate an appropriate error signal, as will the complete non-return of a displaced tappet.

Abstract: The invention concerns a package with a hinged lid and consists of a collar made out of a separate blank, especially to enclose cigarettes, and of a blank with successive portions of the blank for the front wall, bottom, back wall, lid back wall, lid top surface and lid front wall, each with side flaps or side strips to form side walls and lid side walls, which are spaced along a separating line that runs from the front side to the back side of the package.
