  • Patent number: 8849363
Abstract: An open-structure magnetic assembly is adapted to generate a homogeneous magnetic field in an accessible space region, including a first and second independent source of magnetic field (10, 12), each generating a contribution to the resulting magnetic field. The first source includes a conducting or superconducting plate (20), carrying an unidirectional current flow (I) from an input side (22) to an output side (24) and at least one external current recirculating path (30) between the output side (24) and the input side (22) of the plate. The second source includes a volume of magnetized material or an arrangement of coils, arranged for generating a magnetic field component oriented according to the magnetic field generated by the first source (10), and whose intensity exhibits a gradient in a direction perpendicular to the conducting plate (20) adapted to compensate, in a region of interest, an opposite gradient in the magnetic field intensity generated by the first source (10).

  • Patent number: 8775124
Abstract: A method for generating a set of analytical redundancy relations representative of a system with which a plurality of sensors is associated for the observation of variables indicative of operating conditions and adapted to enable detection and discrimination of faults. A complete set of analytical redundancy relations of the system is built from a set of intermediate relations established between observable and non-observable variables of the system, wherein each intermediate relation is generated by combining two predetermined relations Rj, Rk, each of which is expressed in an implicit form as a tuple (i) of a subset Sj of system variables, (ii) of the set Cj of the support components for said relation, and (iii) of the set Tj of the primary relations used to derive said intermediate relation.

  • Patent number: 8652042
Abstract: A human skin moisture measuring device having an interdigitated resistive sensor formed on a plate-like transparent support is described, with a face designed to be placed into contact with the skin to be subjected to the moisture degree measurement. The device further comprises image sensing means turned towards the opposite face of the support and a lighting device arranged sideways relative to the support to direct the light radiation in the support at a prefixed angle. Means for processing the signal coming from the interdigitated resistive sensor and from the image sensing means give as output a value of the measured moisture degree that is normalized with respect to the actual surface of contact between skin and sensor.

  • Patent number: 8311783
Abstract: A method for the generation of a set of conflicts for model-based system diagnostics is described, with which system a plurality of sensors is associated for the observation of variables indicative of operation conditions. The method starts from generating a complete set of Analytical Redundancy Relations (ARRs) in implicit form and, for each diagnosis instance: it performs a system simulation, computing the expected values for a first subset of Analytical Redundancy Relations (D-ARRs) including the relations involving only one system observation variable; it compares the expected and observed values of the system observation variables to identify the inconsistent variables, i.e.

  • Patent number: 8259772
Abstract: A method of producing a lasing microsource of colloidal nanocrystals. The method includes the steps of preparing a nanocrystal solution in a solvent; depositing at least a drop of the nanocrystals solution with a drop volume below 1 nl on a flat substrate; and evaporating the solvent to dryness thereby to obtain at the edge of the evaporated drop a single annular stripe including a domain wherein the nanocrystals are arranged in an ordered array, wherein the ordered nanocrystals in the domain constitute an active region capable of lasing and the radially inner and outer edges of the stripe define a resonant cavity in which the active region is inserted.

  • Publication number: 20110306473
Abstract: An actuator (10) includes a body (12), an output member (14) slidably received in the body (12) along—a first axis (X1), an electric motor (18) arranged to set into rotation a motor shaft (20) about a, second axis (X2) and a motion conversion mechanism (22) for converting the rotary motion produced by the electric motor (18) about the second axis (X2) into a translational motion of the output member (14) along the first axis (X1). The motion conversion mechanism (22) includes a driving pulley (24) which is drivingly connected for rotation with the motor shaft (20) and an elongated mechanical transmission member which is wound onto the driving pulley (24) and is fastened at its two opposite ends to the output member (14) to draw this latter in either direction along the first axis (X1) as a result of the rotation of the driving pulley (24) in either direction. The output member (14) is shaped as a rod and is received in a cylindrical cavity (16) of the body (12) so as to project partially therefrom.

  • Publication number: 20090305291
Abstract: A method and device, based on a film of a luminescent substance, such as colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals dispersed in a polymer matrix, for conducting quantitative and real-time analyses of PCR processes or of biomolecular interactions in genomics and/or proteomics. The optical detection system is based on FRET processes between the luminescent substance (which acts as the donor in the FRET process) and a suitable fluorophore (which acts as the acceptor species) with which the DNA or other biomolecule is marked. The device is essentially composed of a reaction microchamber with a wall formed by a thin film made of polymer material, in which the nanocrystals are uniformly dispersed, or made of a photoluminescent or electroluminescent polymer. Molecular probes are chemically immobilized on the surface of the polymer film for the specific recognition of the analyte which is to be determined in real time.
