Patent number: 9463694Abstract: A configurable vehicle cluster is described which extends down below a top of the steering column to provide a display of information. The display can display information to the driver through or around the steering wheel and the recess in the vehicle cluster through which the steering wheel column extends. An instrument cluster is positioned adjacent the steering assembly and includes a display having an edge that is non-linear and may at least partly wrap around the steering column to increase the viewing area of the cluster. The display may extend around the steering column behind the steering wheel. The vehicle cluster can be mounted lower in a vehicle while providing adequate viewing area and conserving space in the vehicle cabin.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 2015Date of Patent: October 11, 2016Assignee: Ford Global Techologies, LLCInventors: Todd N. Clark, Kathleen M. Schulz, Christopher Tulik, Mark Larry

Patent number: 8775048Abstract: The method for controlling a safety system (102-108) of a vehicle (10) determines a reference velocity from a first front wheel sensor (20A) and a second front wheel speed signal from a second front wheel sensor (20B). An axle speed sensor (20C) may be used to determine an axle speed signal. A first rear speed signal and a second rear speed signal are determined from the reference velocity, a slip effect and a yaw signal. The yaw signal may be determined from a yaw rate sensor (28). Safety system (102-108) may be controlled in response to the first rear wheel speed signal and the second rear wheel speed signal.Type: GrantFiled: December 24, 2012Date of Patent: July 8, 2014Assignee: Ford Global TechologiesInventors: Michael Edward Brewer, Todd Allen Brown, Thomas Salmon

Patent number: 5964328Abstract: A hydrokinetic torque converter includes an impeller cover and bypass clutch located within the impeller housing. The impeller cover has welded to it a clutch plate, which carries friction material adjacent the clutch piston. The piston has legs that extend axially into engagement with helical springs carried in a damper assembly arranged in series with the damper between the impeller cover and the input shaft of the transmission. The springs are located in a retainer that accommodates two, three or four springs, as required by the torque requirements of the clutch and damper. The spring constant of the damper can be linear or piecewise linear over the full displacement range of the damper springs.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 1997Date of Patent: October 12, 1999Assignee: Ford Global Techologies, Inc.Inventors: John William Fallu, Fraser John MacDonald, Stephen Harold Henning
