Abstract: A method for preparing a cyclobutene compound or a cyclopentenone is provided. The method comprises contacting an ?,?-diketone with a metal acetylide at a temperature below 0° C. to thereby form a reaction mixture comprising a bis-alkyne precursor. The bis-alkyne precursor rearranges into a bis-allenic intermediate, which undergoes further rearrangement into the cyclobutene compound or the cyclopentenone compound as the temperature of the reaction mixture increases from below 0° C. to above 0° C.

Abstract: A cooling system includes a surface comprising a plurality of orifices and a flow control plasma actuator positioned proximate an orifice to induce cooling air attachment to the surface. In an exemplary embodiment, the plasma actuator includes a power source, a first electrode in contact with a first dielectric layer and connected to the power source, a second electrode in contact with a second dielectric layer and connected to the power source, and a ground electrode. The power source drives the first electrode with a first ac voltage pattern and drives the second electrode with a second ac voltage pattern. The first voltage pattern and the second voltage pattern have a phase difference. In further embodiments, a dc voltage can be used to drive one or more of the electrodes, where the dc voltage can be pulsed in specific embodiments.

Abstract: An optical device including a shaped electrode on a substrate thereof utilizes total internal reflection to provide improved transmission of electromagnetic radiation (‘light’) to the substrate compared to standard electrode designs that involve flat electrode surfaces. Redirection of incident light by a tilted or otherwise shaped contact or material added on the contact provides otherwise reflected light to an open surface region of the substrate. Optional plasmon mediated focusing of incident p-polarized light may be realized.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are directed to a layered organic light emitting diode (OLED) device comprising a buckled structure that provides an improved light output relative to flat OLED devices. The buckled structure has a fine buckling with a quasi-periodicity of 100 to 700 nm and a gross buckling of 10 to 20 ?m. Embodiments of the invention are directed to a method of producing the OLED device comprising a buckled structure, where a transparent substrate is coated with a transparent elastomeric layer, upon which a thin metal layer of 20 to 100 nm is deposited at an elevated temperature. Upon cooling to ambient temperature, the metal layer buckles with the formation of a fine buckling with a quasi-periodicity of 100 to 700 nm and a gross buckling of 10 to 20 ?m. The metal layer is oxidized to a transparent metal oxide layer with the retention of the buckling.

Abstract: Embodiments pertain to live storage migration for virtual machines. Specific embodiments can implement the migration of VM disk images without service interruption to the running workload. Specific embodiments relate to storage migration between different disk arrays. Embodiments of the subject invention relate to a method and apparatus that can enhance the efficiency of virtual machine (VM) live storage migration in heterogeneous storage environments from a multi-dimensional perspective, e.g., user experience, device wearing, and/or manageability. Specific embodiments utilize one or more of the following: adaptive storage migration strategies, or techniques, such as 1) Low Redundancy (LR), which generates a reduced, and preferably the least, amount of redundant writes; 2) Source-based Low Redundancy (SLR), which can help keep a desirable balance between IO performance and write redundancy; and 3) Asynchronous IO Mirroring (AIO), which seeks high, and preferably the highest, IO performance.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are directed to IR photodetectors with gain resulting from the positioning of a charge multiplication layer (CML) between the cathode and the IR sensitizing layer of the photodetector, where accumulating charge at the CML reduces the energy difference between the cathode and the CML to promote injection of electrons that result in gain for an electron only device. Other embodiments of the invention are directed to inclusion of the IR photodetectors with gain into an IR-to-visible up-conversion device that can be used in night vision and other applications.
