Abstract: Processes and systems for generating hydrogen gas from resonant cavities are disclosed. A preferred version includes separating a resonant cavity into two compartments with a dielectric type diaphragm, injecting gases such as ammonia into one compartment and generating electromagnetic energy from an antenna, microwave generator or waveguide into the other compartment so that a plasma discharge is formed in the cavity, and hydrogen gas can be selectively released from an outport of the cavity.

Abstract: A method for causing a membrane to become permeable to a first chemical species, in which the membrane is contacted with a solution comprising a second chemical species. The membrane comprises a polyelectrolyte complex film comprising a positively-charged polyelectrolyte and a negatively-charged polyelectrolyte. The second chemical species selectively interacts with the membrane, and selective interaction of the second chemical species with the membrane causes the membrane to become permeable to the first chemical species, thereby causing the first chemical species to permeate the membrane.

Abstract: The present invention provides HIV-derived lentivectors which are multiply modified to create highly safe, efficient, and potent vectors for expressing transgenes for gene therapy. The lentiviral vectors comprise various combinations of an inactive central polypurine tract, a stuffer sequence, which may encode drug susceptibility genes, and a mutated hairpin in the 5? leader sequence that substantially abolishes replication. These elements are provided in conjunction with other features of lentiviral vectors, such as a self-inactivating configuration for biosafety and promoters such as the EF1? promoter as one example. Additional promoters are also described. The vectors can also comprise additional transcription enhancing elements such as the wood chuck hepatitis virus post-transcriptional regulatory element.
Abstract: The present invention provides derivatives of ethanologenic Escherichia coli K011 constructed for the production of lactic acid. The transformed E. coli of the invention are prepared by deleting the genes that encode competing pathways followed by a growth-based selection for mutants with improved performance. These transformed E. coli are useful for providing an increased supply of lactic acid for use in food and industrial applications.

Abstract: Apparatus, systems, methods and devices of an optical system for producing a laser beam having pitchfork profile. The system includes a laser source providing an input Gaussian beam, refractive optical lenses for converting the input Gaussian beam into a super Gaussian beam. A focusing lens focuses the super Gaussian beam, where by diffraction effect after the focusing lens, the beam profile near a focal spot is a pitchfork shaped beam. In an embodiment, the refractive optical lenses are plano-aspheric lenses. The pitchfork shaped beam is produced by passing the input Gaussian beam through plano-aspheric lenses to produce the super Gaussian output beam, and passing the super Gaussian output beam through a focusing lens to produce the output beam having a pitchfork profile. In an embodiment, the pitchfork shaped beam is applied to laser microvias drilling in electronic packaging to produce residue free holes at reduced production cost with simplified procedures.

Abstract: A method for a multi-path source routing in a sensor network. In the sensor network including a sink node and a plurality of sensor nodes, the sensor network transmits data packets through a downlink route set based on a routing table generated by collecting uplink neighbor information of each sensor node from a control message for initializing a network and an uplink route formed by using uplink neighbors of each sensor node. Uplink neighbors for transmitting data from each sensor node to the sink node by performing a network initialization process and acquires the information in the sink node to generate the multi-path is maintained. As a result, it has advantages of reducing a control message overhead while using the multi-path and increasing scalability and energy efficiency by keeping a routing table small in the sensor node regardless of the size of the network.

Abstract: This invention shows how to make and use a biodiesel-based fuel in diesel engines without incurring the NOx penalty. Embodiments primarily relate to an optimum range of bulk modulus of compressibility for biodiesel blends, which results in generating “NOx neutral” biodiesel blends or to formulate biodiesel blends with lower NOx emissions than conventional petroleum diesel fuel. These biodiesel blends preferably comprise synthetic paraffinic middle distillate derived from a hydrocarbon synthesis to generate synthetic environmentally-friendly diesel fuels.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a Fourier transform-based phasor estimation method and apparatus capable of eliminating the S influence of exponentially decaying DC offsets. According to a Fourier transform-based phasor estimation method according to an embodiment of the present invention, an input signal is sampled, and samples of one-cycle data of the input signal are separated into at least two sample groups. A Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is performed on each of the sample groups. A DC offset included in the input signal is calculated on a basis of results of the DFT on each of the sample groups, and an error caused by the DC offset is calculated using the calculated DC offset. A phasor of a fundamental frequency component included in the input signal is estimated by eliminating the calculated error, caused by the DC offset, from the results of the DFT on the input signal.
