  • Publication number: 20090257316
Abstract: The disclosed system uses seismic signaling to locate survivors in a mine collapse. A separate transmitter with a specific pre-selected frequency or frequencies is placed in pre-positioned safety zones of a mine. The system generates frequency-locked, unmodulated seismic energy, which allows rescuers to identify the safety zone where a transmitter is activated. The transmitter comprises an oscillator that generates the signal. The oscillator drives the transducer. The transducer causes the inertial mass to move. The movement of the inertial mass generates the seismic waves, which are conducted through the pressure plate to the earth. The seismic signal is detected then amplified, filtered, converted and then processed. The use of a continuous signal enables the processing unit to identify the frequency of the signal with a very low error rate, using frequency content identification. The disclosure also describes a method for transmitting seismic waves through the earth using the above described system.

  • Publication number: 20090259355
Abstract: A system and method of determining and applying power split ratios to power sources within hybrid vehicles. The power split ratio is determined using a two-scale dynamic programming technique to achieve optimal state of charge depletion over the course of a trip. On the macro-scale level, a global state of charge profile is created for the entire trip. On the micro-scale level, the state of charge profile and accompanying power split ratio is recalculated at the end of each segment as the vehicle proceeds along the trip. Various trip modeling techniques are used to provide constraints for the dynamic programming.

  • Publication number: 20090257863
Abstract: The ‘hydrokinetic turbine assembly’ is a device for the conversion of the kinetic energy of oscillating tidal currents into rotary torque to generate clean electric power. This device is a horizontal axis hydroturbine with a plurality of trapezoidal symmetrical blades placed at about 45 degrees to the axis. The inclination of the blades assures its maximum energy conversion capacity and the dual reaction function of the turbine where ‘floods and ebbs” are alternatively converted into rotary torque. The inner blade frame, its aerodynamic contour, and at least one connective circumferential blade-ring, add strength buoyancy and sensitivity to slow currents. This hydrokinetic turbine is separated from the electric generators and can be placed in pre-planned current flow locations for greater efficiency.
