Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system for presenting a program guide in response to a user request to stream a broadcast subject to a blackout is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system receives a media program request, and if the requested media program is blacked out, provides information from the requesting to device to present a program guide or other information available to the user in lieu of the unavailable streamed media program.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, article of manufacture, and a memory structure for conveniently providing animated bitmap image files from media is described. The method uses a technique in which a plurality of PNG files are generated and transmitted to be presented to the user via an overlay to a media program player.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating a broadcast video stream from a primary video component having a live feed from a source remote from the virtual media control system in at least near real time is disclosed. Live queueing events are inserted into the live video feed and automatically interpreted to insert secondary video components that become part of a broadcast video stream.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for presenting a media program concurrently with viewer questions and live commentary about the media program is disclosed. As the media program is broadcasted, messages from the first group regarding the media program are accepted. The accepted messages are filtered to identify suitable messages of interest and to present only those messages to a second group for comment. The identified messages from the first group and comments from the second group are added to the broadcast media program concurrently or in real time.

Abstract: A system and method for generating or increasing viewership of a broadcast of an episode of a series by an affiliate to a plurality of receiver stations is disclosed. A live prefacing media program is transmitted to users within an affiliates market in such a way that does not conflict with the affiliate's exclusive right to transmit a media program within that market. The live prefacing media program includes media program clips from previous episodes of a series, and users can vote on their favorite media program clips. Such votes alter the content presented in the live prefacing media program. Transmission of the live prefacing media program terminates when the affiliates broadcast of the next episode of the series begins, thus encouraging or “throwing” viewers to view that episode.

Abstract: A method, apparatus, article of manufacture, and a memory structure for allocating and committing votes in a variety of voting paradigms is described. In one embodiment, the method describes a system applicable in a plurality of time zones and comprises determining if an allocation of at least a portion of N1 votes among one or more candidates is received from a first user via a first device during a first period, accepting and storing the allocation of votes, only if the allocation is received during the first period, receiving a user command committing the stored allocation of the N1 votes among the plurality of candidates, determining if the command is received during a second period, and committing the stored first user allocation of N1 votes among the one or more candidates only if the command is received during the second period.

In one embodiment, the method comprises accepting packets in a switch, routing the flow of the packets to a first destination via the switch according to a switch flow rule, receiving an updated switch flow rule from a controller before the rerouting time, the updated switch flow rule defining the rerouted flow of packets, and rerouting the flow of packets according to the updated switch flow rule at a rerouting time indicated by a packet of the accepted packets.

Abstract: An irregular arrangement of slots in a cylindrical slot-array antenna is used to control the radiation pattern, achieving a variation of gain and/or beam tilt with azimuth. A design methodology for slot-array antennas achieves efficient and rapid optimization by minimizing the number of degrees of freedom and the number of significant mutual-coupling interactions. A useful range of designs is achieved by requiring that the slots are arranged in bays and that all slots, and their probes, are identical. Bays are separated by approximately a wavelength and, therefore, mutual coupling between bays can be ignored. Although the antenna slots are physically grouped into bays, the analytical approach groups the slots into paths defined by a simultaneous variation in z and &phgr; coordinates of the slots.
