  • Patent number: 6098275
Abstract: An electrical connector press for connecting an electrical connector to a printed circuit board. The electrical connector has contacts with compliant attachment zones for insertion into holes of the printed circuit board The press comprises a gripping device for holding a housing of the connector, a force measuring device connected to the gripping device a distance measuring device connected to the gripping device; and a controller connected to the gripping device, the force measuring device and the distance measuring device. The controller controls movement of the gripping device towards the printed circuit board. The controller is connected to a memory having data of geometry of the contacts and the data of a desired insertion depth of the contacts into the holes. The controller can determine a distance which the contacts should be inserted into the holes based upon the data in the memory and force sensed by the force measuring device after the compliant attachment zones contact the printed circuit board.

  • Patent number: 6089897
Abstract: A connector is made with a male body and a female body that can be partially fitted into each other. The female body, within itself, possesses a ring pushed back towards the exterior by a spring. The ring is held inside the female body by a window into which it gets embedded. During the insertion of the male body, a stop of this body pushes the ring back towards the back of the female body. The ring then releases the window which gets embedded in a groove of the male body. The coupling and the fixed joining of the two parts of the connector are then automatic. To uncouple them, it is enough to press on the lever which carries along the window. The spring which pushes back the ring also contributes to the effortless ejection of the male body. It is shown that in no case should force be exerted except in a single direction: a longitudinal direction on the male connector to couple it and a transversal direction on a lever of the window to uncouple the two elements.

  • Patent number: 6065978
Abstract: An input/output connector for a portable communication device, wherein the input/output connector is to be surface mounted on a printed circuit board. The input/output connector comprises an insulating housing, contacts and means for shaping the contacts. The insulating housing has two positioning dogs fixed to lateral parts of the insulating housing. The two positioning dogs are to be soldered to the printed circuit board when the input/output connector is mounted thereto. The contacts are also to be soldered to the printed circuit board when the input/output connector is surfaced mounted to the printed circuit board. The means for shaping the contacts are received and mounted rigidly on a specified reference surface of the insulating housing. The means for shaping the contacts constrain and wedge the contacts relative to the reference surface of the insulating housing so that each of the contacts is contained in a common plane of reference for the coflatness of the contacts.
