Abstract: In a method and apparatus for generating a print image, particularly a franking imprint, on an image carrier composed of at least one first partial image and a second partial image that are transversely offset relative to a first direction, a relative motion between a drop-ejecting print head and the image carrier is generated along the first direction in a first step for generating the first partial image, a transverse offset between the print head and the image carrier is generated in a second direction proceeding transversely to the first direction in a second step, and a relative motion between the print head and the image carrier is generated along the first direction in a third step for generating the second partial image.

Abstract: In a postage meter machine, a method for the operation of a postage meter machine as well as method for data communication between a postage meter machine and a remote data center, the postage meter machine has a central processing device and a data transmission device connected thereto for the transmission of information between the processing device and the remote data center via a telecommunication network. The data transmission device has a connection unit for making the connection to a telecommunication line of the telecommunication network. A monitoring device in the postage meter machine monitors the usage status of the telecommunication line.

Abstract: A mail processing system has a printing machine base station controlled via a personal computer. A printhead for a purely electronic printing is driven by a printing control electronics and, together with a conveyor unit, forms which is adaptable to items of differing thicknesses printing station for mixed mail processing. The components of the personal computer are in communication via a PC system bus and include a security arrangement that is connected to the PC system bus via a parallel input/output interface and is connected to the printing machine base station via at least one fast interface. The fast interface is a specific data transmission unit for fast serial data transmission to the specific interface unit and/or to the printing control electronics of the machine base. The security arrangement contains a user-specific hardware circuit with units for the implementation of accounting and security functions.

Abstract: A configuration for detecting mail items includes rigid optical waveguide elements between a monitoring location and transmitting and receiving devices on a main printed circuit board. The configuration makes use of a transmitted-light principle for detecting mail items to be franked.

Abstract: A method for operating a postage meter and addressing machine includes request steps for entering at least a shipping destination address, a step for generating the print image for the address field and a step for starting the printout of the address. By nesting information processes and motion processes in intervening steps before the printing of the franking image, a time-optimized executive sequence is achieved overall when printing the address and the franking image.

Abstract: In a method for determining the number of normal imprints implementable in a printing device with a remaining ink quantity, to a computational determination of this number is made when a sensor-acquired, predetermined remaining ink quantity is signaled. In an arrangement for the implementation of the method, a microprocessor is programmed to undertake a rough computational determination of the remaining number of imprints to signal the need to change the ink tank cassette before the reserve quantity is tapped for use, to generate a message after a recognition of the change of the ink tank cassette, and to display it on a display. The microprocessor waits for an entry of a code via an input unit. Upon entry of the code, the microprocessor implements a check of the input code as to whether the changed ink tank cassette is authorized, and modifies the operation of the device if the completed check of the code has yielded an invalidity.

Abstract: In a method and arrangement for determining a requirement to replace a component in a device, the measurement of a first parameter that has an unbeneficial influence on the consumption or the service life of the component is replaced by the measurement of at least two parameters that represent the first parameter and whose changes allow the current condition of the component to be calculated. A count reading is thereby modified such that it approaches an outage threshold that is specific for the component and such that the device emits a warning before the end of use or end of the service life of the component part is reached. The invention can be advantageously utilized for the indirect measurement of parameters of components that are located in a security module or in its immediate proximity, for example for determining a requirement for battery replacement for security modules.

Abstract: In a method and system for communicating shipping orders for postal matter between a shipper and at least one carrier whose service are employed for conveying the postal matter to a recipient, the communication ensues via an intermediary who receives the shipping order of the shipper for at least one piece of mail. A selection of a carrier is made from a number of available carriers according to at least one predetermined selection criterion. This selection can ensue before or after receipt of the shipping order by the intermediary. The intermediary relays the shipping order to the selected carrier.

Abstract: In a postage meter machine that has a printing unit with a replaceable print head, a print head for such a postage meter machine and a method for the authentication of such a print head, a number of manipulation possibilities are precluded, such as refilling an authorized print head, unauthorized ink usage of a printhead and using an authorized print head in a conventional printer without paying fees for franking. For this purpose a security code is generated by an encryption algorithm from a first identification code attached to the print head and from a second identification code stored in a memory unit allocated to the print head, and is compared to a security code that is likewise stored in the memory unit when the print head is manufactured.

Abstract: In an arrangement for the power supply for a security domain of a device, a first battery is connected to a first input of a battery switchover device in the security region and a second battery is arranged in a non-security region of the device housing and is connected to a second input of the battery switchover device. The battery switchover device is coupled to a monitoring unit in the security region of the device. The monitoring unit is preferably composed of an analog-to-digital converter and a module processor for the evaluation of the connected battery voltages.

Abstract: An apparatus for processing and transferring mail includes a franking and/or addressing machine and a downstream depositing apparatus for depositing items of mail stackwise one above the other. The mail is transported continuously in the machine by a transporting belt and is printed by a contactless printing device, such as an ink-jet printing head being immobile during printing. A transporting roller over which the mail is guided is disposed in the machine immediately downstream of the belt at a sufficient distance from the printing head and is driven at a circumferential speed greater than that of the belt. An orthogonal distance between the roller and the printing head causes a course of the mail to be determined by the belt alone during printing.

Abstract: In a mail processing system with a franking and addressing machine and to a method for combined franking and address printing, both printing jobs for franking or addressing are sequentially implemented in a specific sequence in separate passes with a single print head. The print medium surface is correspondingly printed while the print medium is transported past the print head. A turning station is provided for rotating a print medium by approximately 180° before or after the printing and is arranged in the mail processing system preceding or following the digital printer device.

Abstract: In an arrangement and a method for data exchange between a postage meter machine and chip cards, a postage meter machine is equipped with a chip card write/read unit and appertaining control system wherein first, corresponding to a succession number a specific insertion sequence for valid chip cards is required in order to reload (update) data, and second, an authorized user is allowed to define a specific sequence for the insertion of lower-ranking, suitably initialized chip cards in order to simplify the function and data entered into the postage meter machine. These latter chip cards set a limited function scope within the postage meter. For their initialization, a table with a specific hierarchic (tree) structure is produced by the user by modifying a pre-stored structure in the postage meter machine.

Abstract: A method and a configuration for controlling the passage of printed media, especially letters or envelopes, in a separating apparatus of a mail processing system, include transferring the printed media, on the output side, with an ejector to a following device, such as a scale or balance or a franking machine. The intention is to widen the field of use and the throughput of printed media is to be matched to that in the following device. A transfer speed is set on the basis of a transport speed of the following device and, in remaining areas of the separating apparatus, the transport speed is optimized on the basis of a respective printed medium position.

Abstract: An ink printer head of individual ink printer modules operating according to the edge-shooter principle equipped with piezoelectric actuators is provided for use in printers for postage meter machines and correspondingly has a large number of nozzles arranged in columns. An assembly has n ink printer modules arranged in registry side-by-side with ink chambers open toward a front side of the assembly with an adapter plate matched to the front face and having openings in registry with ink chambers is disposed adjacent the front face. A nozzle plate adapted to the adapter plate is disposed in front of the adapter plate. The nozzle plate is supported by the adapter plate and a spatial matching between the larger ink chambers and the smaller nozzles is achieved. Moreover, the two ink chamber columns of a module are united to form one nozzle column. A reduction in the manufacturing outlay while preserving the requiring printing precision is achieved.

Abstract: In a method for the control of a fast dynamic scale a first operating mode controls the transport device for transport of postal matter to a further processing station, a measurement with a weighing cell during the transport is made and an evaluation of the measured values with the letter format microprocessor for the weight determination given dynamic weighing, and weighed values are supplied to the further processing station. An automatic switching into a second operating mode for the semi-dynamic operation of the scale with static weighing ensues dependent on the result of a determination of the dimensions of the following piece of mail in a first processing station arranged upstream in the mail stream.

Abstract: A configuration for determining the dimensions of printed media, especially of letters or envelopes, is used in a separating apparatus of a mail processing system, in which the printed media are transferred on an output side by an ejector to a following device, such as a scale or a franking machine. The field of use is widened by determining the dimensions of the printed media by using existing elements. A device is provided for scanning and determining the dimensions of the printed media, and the ejector is included in the scanning of the printed media. Sensors are electrically connected to an evaluation circuit which transmits measurement results to the following device.

Abstract: In a data security and a security module, first and second data processing units are employed having non-volatile memories for postal register data. At a first point in time at least following letter insertion and following a check of the previously valid accounting data on the basis of an authorization code, the first data processing unit undertakes an advance calculation of the new postal register setting, which is made taking the previously set postage value into consideration, and forms a new authorization code. At a second point in time, the second data processing unit undertakes an accounting with calculation of the new postal register setting, which occurs taking the previously set postage value into consideration. A storage of the pre-calculated, new authorization code and of the new postal register set determined by the second data processing unit in the non-volatile memories subsequently ensue.

Abstract: In a method an arrangement for controlling a dynamic scale is set via an input unit according to the respective requirements for processing a mixed mail stack, the setting optionally ensuing on the basis of selected shipping parameters and/or operating parameters that are displayed via a display unit. A modification of the operating parameters and data corresponding to the setting can be undertaken and stored in the non-volatile memory of the scale. Weighing of a supplied piece of mail takes place and a controller drives a conveyor of the scale such that the piece of mail is transported to a further processing station dependent on the operating parameters and data that have been set.
