Abstract: A press includes a movable platen and a non-moving platen within a housing defining a pressing chamber, an opening is defined at the top of the pressing chamber for receiving a juice pack and an outlet is defined in a front wall of the chamber vertically between the top and bottom of the movable platen. The lid may include a front portion extending over the front of the pressing chamber and defining a slot that is aligned with a slot defined by the front wall to form the outlet. The front wall, the lid, and a sidewall may be removable for cleaning. The juice pack may have edges defining a rectangle with a spout at a first corner and an aperture for suspending the juice pack in the pressing chamber at a second corner that is intersected by a same edge intersecting the first corner.

Abstract: A juicer cartridge includes a liquid impermeable compartment at least partially surrounding food matter. An information region may be disposed on the liquid impermeable compartment, wherein the information region includes information for controlling at least one pressing parameter for pressing the juicer cartridge, such as a desired pressing speed, force profile, pressing temperature, total pressing stroke, number of pauses, number of press and/or retract cycles, and a distance of a press and/or retract cycle. The juicer cartridge may be used by placing it in the pressing chamber of a juicer that reads information from the information region and presses the juicer cartridge using the information.

Food matter loaded into the juicer cartridge may be compressed by a corresponding juicer and expelled through an outlet that may be sealed until activation. Food matter may be pre-sized according to various physical characteristics, and the juicer cartridge may be injected with a gas to enhance shelf life and reduce nutrient loss. The juicer may also be provided with “smart” functionality to provide safety features, track usage, and enhance the operator experience. Several embodiments of packing systems for preparing juicer cartridges are also described.
