  • Patent number: 6517967
Abstract: A high capacity primary (single-use; non-rechargeable) battery pack for high current portable appliances such as cellular phones employs electrochemical cells that use ambient oxygen for one of the electrodes. The pack makes possible a simple low cost design by providing for oxygen supply in a completely passive yet compact configuration. Cells may be arranged inside a housing in a tightly packed arrangement by providing internal spaces that are sized to permit diffusion and, if possible, bulk air flow. The highest volumetric energy density is achievable by permitting bulk flow of air into the housing. It has been found that in practical use, in applications such as cellular telephones, that bulk air flow can play a significant role in gas exchange required for operation. A number of design criteria are developed for providing for a mix of molecular diffusion and bulk flow in the design of battery packs according to the invention.

  • Patent number: 6387553
Abstract: A battery power supply has a primary battery to provide long service life and a secondary battery to provide short instantaneous power pulses required by loads with variable duty cycles and puslatile load profiles such as digital cellular phones. The primary battery is linked to the power pulse battery in parallel and in series to the load. In the pulse battery, one of the electrodes has at least two electroactive materials as components of the same electrode. These different electroactive materials are selected to have different discharge potentials, charging potentials, and voltage outputs. One of the materials provides a voltage output of a predetermined level and the other of the materials lowers the overall charging voltage of the electrode below that of the first material. The mixed electrode in the pulse battery permits the pulse battery to be charged by the primary battery during the off-pulse periods throughout a substantial portion of the entire discharge voltage range of the primary battery.

  • Patent number: 5531199
Abstract: An internal combustion engine in which each cylinder is connected to sources both of air and of fuel held as a gas under pressure and in which the compression stroke, during which a full charge of air is drawn and compressed, is substantially completed before the fuel charge is then admitted and the mixture ignited to start the subsequent power stroke. • Patent number: 4584930
Abstract: A ventilation system for a glove box (1) comprising first (4,5) and second (10,14) extract flow lines connected in parallel between a common outlet (15) from the box and a suction pump (6). Each extract line includes a vortex amplifier (3,9) and a filter (11,12). The vortex amplifiers are chosen such that under normal operating conditions the required depression within the box is maintained by flow along the first of the extract lines and a reverse flow from the vortex amplifier in the second extract line passes through the filter in that line and exits through the first extract line without passing into the glove box. The second extract line functions as an emergency extract capability in the event of a breach of the glove box and the reverse flow keeps the filter in the line in a clean and usable condition.

  • Patent number: 4576779
Abstract: A closure in the form of a wedge-shaped member (3) to close the end of a container, such as a transport flask. The wedge-shaped member (3) carries a seal plate (7) which is urged by spring means (9) to project beyond the smaller end of the wedge-shaped member when the latter is in a position to open the end of the container. On advancing the wedge-shaped member (3) to close the end of the container the projecting end of the plate (7) first abuts against a stop (18) and continued advance of the wedge-shaped member relative to the seal plate (7) causes displacement of the seal plate towards the interior of the container to effect a seal at the end of the container.
