Patent number: 7162904Abstract: A method for producing a bung for a metal cask that does not require a conventional collar and seal, and that simplifies the operations for forming the bung. The method disclosed in the present application includes the following steps. First, a prestamping operation creates a preforming dome in the wall of the cask such that a cuvett is formed. Second, an approximately cylindrical shaft is formed by stamping and thus puncturing the wall of the cask at the location of the bung. Third, the protruding edge of the shaft is folded down the to form an external rolled edge. Fourth, encircling the shaft with a rigid ring constituted by at least two annular sections such that the metal does not tear during the formation of the threads. Finally, the method of the present invention includes the step of implementing a roller threading head to form internal threads in the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 2002Date of Patent: January 16, 2007Assignee: Gallay S.A.Inventors: Jean-Claude Carayon, Lucien Brun

Patent number: 5144992Abstract: An improved sealing arrangement is provided for a gravity transfer installation of the type in which product is transferred from a container having a sealable opening in its base, downwardly through a chute, and into a receptacle. The arrangement comprises a first plate mounted on guides attached to the chute and for sliding between a position where it covers an upper opening of the chute and a position where it uncovers this opening, and further includes a second plate mounted on guides attached to the container for sliding relative to the latter between a position where it covers a lower opening of the container and a position where it uncovers that opening. The arrangement is constructed such that, in the course of displacement of the container, the movements of the two sliding plates relative to their respective guides are synchronous but in opposite directions.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1990Date of Patent: September 8, 1992Assignees: Gallay S.A., Lhoest Vereeken Concepts SprlInventors: Marc Jaerger, Willy Lhoest

Patent number: 4784282Abstract: A method of seaming a preformed end closure to a preformed container body of a drum or the like for forming a seam of reduced radial projection relative to the sidewall of the container body. At the start of seaming the end closure is in driving engagement with a rotating chuck and flanges of the end closure and container body are in overlying relation. The skirt of the end closure is radially spaced from the sidewall of the chuck and driving engagement therebetween is effected in the annular curved connecting zone between the skirt and recessed transverse central portion of the end closure. The skirt flares from the central portion to the flange thereof and is preferably at least in part frustoconical or has an annular step. The sidewall of the container body is centered on the skirt of the end closure and is spaced a radial distance from the chuck sidewall substantially greater than the thickness of the sheet metal of the end closure of the skirt.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 1987Date of Patent: November 15, 1988Assignee: Gallay S.A.Inventors: Lucien F. Le Bret, Robert Saada

Patent number: 4781301Abstract: The present invention relates to a process of fabrication of drum bodies having rolling hoops, and the drum bodies so produced. The drum body is provided with a plurality of corrugations generally offset towards the center of the drum with the peaks of the corrugations in line with the undeformed part of the drum. At least one of the peaks of the corrugations is then expanded radially outwardly to make a rolling hoop.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1987Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: Gallay S.A.Inventors: Lucien F. Patent number: 4626158Abstract: A triple seam for assemblying a bottom to a container body, and a process for forming the triple seam. The process comprises the step of forming an axially extending seaming structure comprising a plurality of layers belonging to adjoining edges of the body and bottom. One of the adjoining edges includes a first layer and a contiguous overfolded second layer having an axial length less than the axial length of said first layer to increase the number of layers in a first axial section of the seaming structure. The process also includes the step of lamination rolling the seaming structure to a uniform width. A hook-shaped profile is formed in said body edge as a preliminary step in this process.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 1984Date of Patent: December 2, 1986Assignee: Gallay S.A.Inventor: Lucien F. Le Bret

Patent number: 4055133Abstract: A method and apparatus for triple roll seaming flanged end closure to a flanged container body. Before the flanges of the end closure and container body are rolled together by a suitably shaped seaming roll, the peripheral portion of the end closure flange is imparted with a frustoconical portion at an angle between about 20.degree. and 50.degree. with respect to the yet undeformed part of the end closure flange followed by a first rolled section which curves substantially around, parallel to the frustoconical zone. The raising of the frustoconical portion and the forming of the first rolled section may be effected substantially simultaneously, either before or after the end closure is positioned in the open end of the container body, in a first tool setup including a single forming roll with parallel entry and exit zone joined through a frustoconical zone connected to a radiused zone.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1976Date of Patent: October 25, 1977Assignee: Gallay S.A.Inventor: Eugene Wessely
