Abstract: A permanent magnet rotor having a unitary aluminum casting surrounding magnets mounted on the shaft which has favorable heat transfer, performance, and cost characteristics, and which may be constructed by the accompanying method. Spacers and rings surrounding the permanent magnets are eliminated by the aluminum casting. Pockets for the permanent magnets are cast into the aluminum. A non-magnetic outer sleeve overlies the shaft, magnets and aluminum layer.
Abstract: An improved hydraulic assist turbocharger system is provided of the type having an hydraulic turbine for supplementally driving a turbocharger during selected engine operating conditions when supplemental air flow to the engine is required. The improved system is adapted for improved engine starting during cold weather conditions by increasing the pressure of hydraulic fluid supplied to the hydraulic turbine during engine cranking and/or decreasing the viscosity of said hydraulic fluid, thereby accelerating the turbocharger rapidly to a rotational speed for supplying sufficient air flow to the engine for starting purposes.

Abstract: A permanent magnet rotor construction technique resulting in a rotor having excellent stiffness characteristics and being capable of higher speeds and longer lengths is disclosed. The rotor is constructed using nonfusion bonding techniques whereby an inner cylinder of magnetizable material is bonded inside a hollow outer cylinder of non-magnetizable material, with the resulting assembly having cylindrical end pieces also of non-magnetizable material bonded at each end. Pockets for receiving the rare earth permanent magents are then machined through the outer cylinder, and the magnets are mounted in the pockets in contact with the magnetizable material of the inner cylinder. Construction of the rotor is completed by installing a thin cylindrical shell over the permanent magnets in the areas of the rotor adjacent thereto.

Abstract: A chemical energy power plant includes control of steam temperature to prevent turbine damage while allowing throttling of the power output level and rapid response to commands for changed power output level.
Abstract: A dual alloy cooled turbine is manufactured by casting a hollow cylinder of first nickel-base alloy material with high creep resistance to produce directionally oriented grain boundaries. A preform of a second nickel-base alloy material with high tensile strength and high low-cycle-fatigue strength is diffusion bonded into the bore of the hollow cylinder by subjecting the cylinder and preform to hot isostatic pressing. The resulting cylindrical block is cut into thin precisely flat wafers. A plurality of alignable holes for forming fluid cooling passages are photochemically etched into the individual wafers. The wafers then are laminated by vacuum diffusion bonding techniques, with the holes aligned to form fluid cooling passages. The resulting laminated block is machined to produce the turbine wheel with turbine blades through which the cooling passages extend.

Abstract: A planetary gear transmission having the capability of accepting input power from two separate, counter-rotating shafts, and combining the input power with application to a single output shaft. The two input shafts are coaxial and each is coupled to its own input sun gear. The output shaft extends from the side of the transmission opposite to the input shafts and is coaxial therewith. Various series of planetary gears mounted on a planet carrier provide the coupling between the input and output sun gears. There is no ring gear, and the carrier is not independently driven.The planetary gear transmission is combined with a continuously variable transmission and a direct drive coupled in split power paths from a single drive shaft to provide constant speed output over a range of 2:1 variation in speed of the drive shaft.
