Abstract: A turbocharger has a meridionally divided turbine housing defining a first scroll and a first nozzle, and a second scroll and a second nozzle. The first and second nozzles are divided from each other by a shroud plate mounted within the nozzle, for isolating the exhaust gas streams flowing through the two nozzles from each other. A plurality of first vanes are disposed in the first nozzle, and plurality of second vanes are disposed in the second nozzle. A nozzle ring rotatably supports a plurality of vane shafts that extend across the first and second nozzles, passing through openings in the shroud plate. A first vane and a second vane are affixed to each vane shaft. Rotation of the vane shafts causes the first vanes and the second vanes to pivot for regulating the two streams of exhaust gas flowing through the first and second nozzles.

Abstract: A method for controlling an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for a compressor so as to switch the mechanism between open and closed positions for adjusting a flow area of the inlet. The method includes an algorithm for determining when the inlet-adjustment mechanism is in a failure mode. In accordance with the method, when the operating point on the compressor map is on the high-flow side of a threshold line at which the inlet-adjustment mechanism is switched from one position to the other, a measured speed or pressure ratio is compared to a theoretical value for the speed or pressure ratio based on a compressor map for the open position of the mechanism. If the measured value differs from the theoretical value by more than a predetermined tolerance, a failure mode is indicated.

Abstract: A turbocharger turbine having housing walls defining a diffuser. Within the diffuser, a center body within the diffuser is supported by de-swirl vanes extending from the diffuser wall. The center body forms a de-swirl passageway having an increasing mean diameter of flow from an upstream end of the center body to a leading edge of the de-swirl vanes. A trailing edge of the de-swirl vanes is near the downstream end of the center body. Annular-type guide vanes surround the center body within the de-swirl passageway. A wastegate system is configured to vent wastegate flow into the diffuser through injection ports on the de-swirl vanes, annular guide vanes and/or center body.
