Abstract: The content of a hard disk drive or the like information storage media that includes content stored in a host protected area (HPA) or reserve area of the hard disk is duplicated using hard disk drive duplicating machinery. The duplication process includes the steps of detecting the presence of a HPA on a source drive, and if detected, generating an HPA area of the same or of a sufficiently accommodating size on the target disk drive. Information from the source HPA drive is written to the thus created HPA area of the target drive. The remaining content from the source drive is written to an available section of the target drive. The invention is thereby able to detect whether a source drive has a HPA, create an HPA on the target drive, and to copy the content of the source HPA to the HPA on the target device to ensure a proper duplication of the target drive.

Abstract: A portable computer system has heat transfer mechanisms incorporated therein for transfer of heat to a docking station with active cooling capacity. A portable computer case has openings placed in alignment with mating openings in the docking station to provide additional active cooling capacity. The portable computer system case also has further openings and a defined air flow path to enhance airflow across a processor to cool it more effectively. A fan in the docking station pulls or pushes air from or into the portable computer system case. The mating openings and further openings in the computer system case are positioned to optimize the cooling effectiveness of the air flow with respect to the processor and other heat producing components. Other devices such as refrigeration coils, heat slugs, and heat pipes are also described. A switch detects when the portable computer is connected to the docking station and causes deactivation of processor slowing power management routines.

Abstract: A digital information appliance comprises a housing having a display disposed on a first surface for displaying information to a user of the digital information appliance and an input device disposed on a second surface opposed to the first surface for imputing information. The input device is oriented with respect to the display so as to be operable by the fingers of the user's hand for input of information while holding the housing so the display is viewable.

Abstract: A card hold down assembly for retaining one or more expansion cards within the chassis of an electronic device such as a computer system, server, photocopier, facsimile machine, printer, or the like is described. The card hold down assembly is comprised of a retainer that engages the mounting bracket securing tab of an expansion card received in the chassis to at least partially restrain the tab for securing said expansion card in the chassis.

Abstract: A system has video output connections capable of connecting to different display devices. The system has input connections capable of receiving image signal from multiple sources. A table of gamma values is indexed by both the display type and image source type. A software or hardware module applies a gamma correction from the table to the received video to transform it to have a gamma consistent with that of the display device. In a further embodiment, the images are encoded with a gamma identifier which is used to index into the table of system gammas. A video card that detects video source and display is also described. The video card utilizes a table of gamma values indexed by video source and display type and operating mode. Images are then corrected by the card to display properly on the display.

Abstract: Apparatus are disclosed for extending cursor control sticks commonly utilized by portable computers to provide a joystick. The apparatus allow adjustment of joystick height, and provide for storage and use of the cursor control stick cap while attached to the mounting post.

Abstract: A system and method for communicating information between an information handling system and a peripheral device of the information handling system are disclosed. A processor is coupled to a bus for carrying information provided by the processor, and a host controller coupled to the bus receives the information and sends the information to the peripheral device according to a first communications standard. A peripheral device controller coupled to the host controller converts the information from the first communications standard to a second communications standard and transmits the information to the peripheral device in accordance with the second communications standard interpretable by the peripheral device. Control information is generated and sent to a peripheral device controller according to a first communications standard. The control information is converted from the first communication standard to a second communication standard and transmitted to the peripheral.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to an improved circuit board support. The present invention provides for quick-assembly, limits circuit board flex, and supports a heat sink. In one aspect of the present invention, an apparatus suitable for supporting a circuit board, includes a support suitable for attachment to a chassis of an information handling system, wherein a heat sink may be attached through a printed circuit board to the support so as to enable the heat sink to be supported by the chassis.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for providing a quicker boot for computer systems is provided. The hibernation state file content of a similar computer system is captured and sent to a unit being manufactured. As a result, the unit being manufactured may operate according to the hibernation state. When the unit is operating in such a fashion, the time required for a reboot is reduced which may provide for more efficient software installation for build to order computer systems.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method are disclosed for converting audio content to digital files (e.g., MP3 files) and then transferring the converted digital files to a portable player utilizing a standalone unit without the requirement of a computer. An apparatus and a method are also disclosed for converting content from a first recordable media to another format and then transferring the converted content to a portable player or a second recordable media upon a single action of a user, such as pressing a single button on an interface. Further, an apparatus and a method are disclosed for docking a portable player with a standalone device capable of transferring digital files (e.g., MP3 files) to the portable player while also recharging the portable player.

Abstract: A light pipe or illumination distributor of a backlit liquid crystal display panel in a hinge or tilt-up display for a laptop computer is coated with a highly reflective coating to control and eliminate the escape of light except through the front or exit face of the illumination distributor which is juxtaposed with the back side of a liquid crystal display panel. The highly reflective coating is further coated with a highly abrasion and shock resistant coating, such as an epoxy paint, to serve as the exterior of the computer display, thereby eliminating the need for a cover for the back of the display.

Abstract: Mounting the cursor actuator control or mouse buttons on the keyboard portion of a portable computer in a manner to permit the translation of the cursor actuator control across the keyboard portion of the portable computer, thereby allows the positioning of the cursor actuator control for comfort and convenience of the operator. The ability to relocate the cursor actuator control further allows any operator of the portable computer to minimize inadvertent operation thereof by the accidental and unintentional contact of user's thumb with the cursor actuator controls.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for selectively obtaining information over a network with an information handling system coupled to the network are disclosed. The network is searched for the information based upon a predetermined criterion, and the information is located on a node of the network where the information is stored. A parameter value of the node where the information is stored is determined, and the determined parameter value is displayed in conjunction with a link to the node whereby a determination may be made whether to obtain the information from the node based upon the determined parameter value. The search results may be ordered and selected according to one or more of determined parameter values of the nodes where the information is stored.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system and method of providing a data image cache. A system suitable for transferring data images includes an image cache suitable for being accessed locally, the image cache suitable for storing at least one data image. Image storage is connected to the image cache over a network, the image storage including a plurality of data images. Wherein, a query is received by the image cache for a data image not included in the image cache, a data image corresponding to the queried image is transferred from the image storage to the image cache over the network.

Abstract: A touchpad pointing device dynamically adjusts cursor control gain characteristics based on the x-y coordinates at which the finger first touches the touchpad for a given cursor control task. In this manner, cursor control gain such as simple cursor tracking rate or cursor acceleration profile may be optimized for each control task without changing settings. The x-y coordinates are preferably grouped into easily identifiable zones on the touchpad surface. Accordingly, a wide range of control gain is available, including very high cursor track rates where long distance cursor excursions are desired, and very low cursor tracking for tasks requiring fine cursor positioning. As a further aspect of the invention, the touchpad also allows control of other operational features such as tapping, tapping sensitivity, and button functionality, thus providing a touchpad that is highly customizable.

Abstract: An adapter for receiving a surplus optical storage media drive capable of stand-alone playing of optical storage media is described. The adapter provides at least the minimum level of functionality required, together with the surplus optical storage media drive, to play optical storage media in order to extend the useful life of the surplus drive. The optical storage media may include compact disks, CD-ROMs, DVDs or the like type of storage media. The adapter provides the capability of connecting with external devices that improve the functionality and usefulness of the drive-adapter system.

The digital information appliance is capable of detecting an environmental influence, such as motion, and determining if the detected environmental influence is potentially harmful. Abstract: A method for correlating an electronic mail message with related (e.g., reply or forwarded) electronic mail messages is disclosed. When a user initiates a reply to an electronic mail message on an electronic mail system, the system checks for reply or other (e.g., forwarded) messages which are related to the original electronic mail message and are received by the user at a later time.
