  • Patent number: 6733264
Abstract: A tool for injection molding of toothbrush bodies of two different plastics components comprises two mold parts which can be moved relative to each other and together constitute four groups of parallel mold cavities. One of the mold parts has a recess for each group of mold cavities. A mold insert fits into the recess. Partial cavities are formed in the mold inserts, which partial cavities each correspond to a head portion of a toothbrush body. A first plastics component is injected into a first pair of groups of the mold cavities and a second plastics component is injected into a second pair of groups of the mold cavities. The mold cavities of the first pair of groups are arranged on the one side and those of the second group are arranged on the other side of a rotatable carrier arm to which the mold inserts are fastened. The mold cavities are arranged in each group parallel to each other and so as to have the same orientation.

  • Patent number: 6702394
Abstract: In a method of melting together axial ends of bunched fibers of thermoplastic material, the fiber ends are brought into contact with the heated surface of a stamp. The body of the stamp is heated by controlling an electric current passing through it. In one embodiment the stamp is cooled by a flow of compressed air before the stamp is separated from the fiber ends. In another embodiment, the stamp is separated from the melted fiber ends, heated to a higher temperature to vaporize any residual fiber material, and cooled by exposure to compressed air until it has no more than the temperature for melting the fiber material.

  • Patent number: 6451229
Abstract: In the proposed method of molding toothbrushes, a mold with relatively movable mold parts (14, 16) defining at least one molding cavity (20) corresponding in shape to a toothbrush body is used. One of the mold parts (16) has a brush head defining cavity portion with a plurality of holes (24) for partial penetration into the cavity portion of a like number of fiber tufts. Plasticized molding material is injected under pressure into the cavity (20). Pressure within the cavity is sensed during the injecting step. The injection is stopped when the pressure within the cavity exceeds a predetermined pressure value, thereby avoiding any leakage of molding material through the holes (24).

  • Patent number: 6406099
Abstract: In order to attach brush bristle tufts onto carriers made of thermoplastic material, which are formed with multiple holes according to a desired tuft pattern, the bristle tufts are first inserted into the holes in such a way that the bristle tips that are to be used protrude from one side while the bristle ends protrude only slightly from the holes on the opposite side. A heated punch has a multiplicity of conical or pyramidal projections. The projections of this punch penetrate between the holes into the mass of the carrier so that this mass softens and is pushed laterally into the interstices of the bristle tufts. In this manner, a tight interlock is created between the material of the bristles and that of the carrier.

  • Patent number: 6372163
Abstract: For implant molding of toothbrushes pre-cut and pre-rounded fiber of thermoplastic material are used. Loose fibers are presented to an endrounding tool in a tuft or bundle and the free ends of the fibers are exposed to a working surface of the tool. Relative movement between the fiber ends and working surface causes the material of the fibers to be heated by friction of a predetermined intensity. The fibers while they are exposed to the working surface of the tool are permitted to flex laterally and are held in an axial direction of the tuft or bundle with their free ends commonly defining a surface different from a plane which is perpendicular to the axial direction, thereby achieving a substantially consistent flexing resistance throughout the cross-section of the tuft or bundle with respect to lateral deflection upon engagement by the endrounding tool.

  • Patent number: 6079788
Abstract: A device for removing individual fiber tufts from a plurality of fiber bins of a brush making machine comprises a tuft remover, a counterpart matching the tuft remover and a movable slide arranged between the counterpart and the fiber bins. The slide has a plurality of through-passages each of which is associated with one of the fiber bins. The outer passages of the slide are inclined at an angle to the central passage. Between the central fiber bin and each of the outer fiber bins an associated ram is arranged. Each ram has an end face which faces the slide and either bears on one side surface area of the slide or applies pressure to the opposite end of one of the outer through-passages, depending on the respective position of the slide. The device allows the tuft remover to selectively pick up tufts of three different types of fiber.

The tufting device has a guide block, a guide channel in the guide block, a tuft driver tongue driven with a reciprocating movement and movably received in the guide channel, and a header having a through channel aligned with the guide channel. The header and guide block are driven with a relative reciprocating movement towards and away from each other. The device further has a drive system with a rotating drive shaft, a cam on the drive shaft and a cam follower riding on the cam. The cam follower is driven by the cam with a reciprocating movement of a predetermined stroke length. The drive system further comprises a conversion mechanism for converting the reciprocating movement of a predetermined stroke length into a drive stroke of an adjustably variable length.
