Abstract: An automated device digs a payload into a geologic formation while filling a hole behind it. The device is made of components including a computer controller; a battery; a motor; a payload body; a drill head having a spiral blade; a cylindrical shell attached to the payload body to form an annulus between an inner wall of the cylindrical shell and the outer wall of the payload body; and a plurality of rotating track treads controlled by the computer controller. The device optionally includes: a hydraulic ram adapted to compress debris; a coil of wire adapted to unwind from the top end of the payload body; a hammer blade; ground penetrating radar; a gimbal mechanism; an engine-generator unit; and a cave traverse system.
