  • Publication number: 20210398696
Abstract: A method and apparatus of limiting power of a boiling water nuclear reactor system includes a reactor pressure vessel, a reactor core disposed in the reactor pressure vessel, a core shroud surrounding the reactor core, a downcomer region disposed between an inner surface of the reactor pressure vessel and the core shroud, a steam line connected to an upper end of the reactor pressure vessel and a condenser system that receives steam from the reactor pressure vessel. A portion of the condenser system condensate is returned to the reactor pressure vessel of the boiling water reactor inside the core barrel above the core rather than into the downcomer. Returning the condensate in this way increases the effectiveness of an isolation condenser system or if the condensate is a portion of the feedwater from the main condenser it provides an effective means to regulate core flow and core power.

  • Patent number: 11112052
Abstract: Systems repair jet pump elbow joining structures like RS1 and RS2 welds. Systems include a base having legs that secure to ends of the elbow in different directions, and a drive plate that joins to flow conduits where they meet the elbow. The drive plate and base may then be pushed together, resulting in compression or joining of the elbow and flow conduit. Multiple drive plates may be used with a single base to compress multiple flow conduits to the base. The base and the drive plates can be driven together with a driving bolt extending through the base and driving plate. To provide a better fit, grooves can be created in the flow conduits through machining from the installed base. The drive plate may be seated into the groove to achieve a desired orientation with less slippage. Example embodiments and methods do not require welding or a welding base.

  • Publication number: 20210193338
Abstract: A nuclear plant includes a nuclear reactor, a containment structure that at least partially defines a containment environment of the nuclear reactor, and a passive containment cooling system that causes coolant fluid to flow downwards from a coolant reservoir to a bottom of a coolant channel coupled to the containment structure and rise through the coolant channel toward the coolant reservoir due to absorbing heat from the nuclear reactor. A check valve assembly, in fluid communication with the coolant reservoir, selectively enables one-way flow of a containment fluid from the containment environment to the coolant reservoir, based on a pressure at an inlet being equal to or greater than a threshold magnitude. A fusible plug, in fluid communication with the coolant reservoir at a bottom vertical depth below the bottom of the coolant reservoir, enables coolant fluid to flow into the containment structure based on at least partially melting.

  • Patent number: 11037426
Abstract: Devices work as both area lighting and ionizing radiation detectors. The lighting is adjustable in response to radiation detection, warning nearby users about radiation. Multiple devices can be plugged into electrical outlets throughout a plant or building to replace conventional lighting like lightbulbs or CFLs. Each device can transmit alerts to notify nearby users and transmit data to processors for aggregation and analysis. The data can be sent wirelessly, over fiber optic cable, as power line communications or otherwise. The data can be multiplexed along a single line. The devices may be in known locations or located based on an ID in the data. This data can be used to locate radiation sources and facilitate analysis and alerting at the location. Operators may respond to the radiation detection by issuing commands to the devices to change lighting output, adjust radiation detection parameters, and take corrective or ameliorative action in the facility.

  • Patent number: 11031140
Abstract: Cover gas control systems include a reservoir and injection path for direct injection into fuel transfer machinery. If seals in the fuel handling machinery leak, cover gas is provided from the reservoir to flow to the leak without contamination from a reactor to which the fuel transfer machinery is joined. This providing cover gas may be passive or automatic in response to a detected low pressure level, detected ambient air ingress, low volume level of cover gas, or manually actuated through an operator. The cover gas may be injected from below the leak but above the reactor. A limitation in the injection path keeps cover gas injection at rates sufficient to allow operator reaction and sealing before the reservoir is depleted. A pressure pulse transmitter, blowout preventer, and transfer port plug are useable in the systems, which can be implemented in fuel handling machinery for reactors using a cover gas.
