Publication number: 20010024566Abstract: Encoded video recorder/player timer programming information listed in a television calendar allows a timer programming feature on a video cassette recorder VCR to be programmed using a compressed code of as few as 1 to 8 digits, which are decoded by a decoder built into an instant programmer to convert the compressed code into channel, date, time and length information. The compressed code indications associated with each television program can be printed in a television program calendar in advance. The user uses controls on the instant programmer to enter the code that signifies the program to be recorded. When the codes are entered they are decoded to channel, day, time-of-day, and length (CDTL) in the instant programmer. Then at the appropriate time the instant programmer transmits the proper commands to a VCR to command the recording of the selected program. This control function can be carried out by using an infrared link.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 30, 2001Publication date: September 27, 2001Applicant: Gemstar Development CorporationInventor: Roy J. Publication number: 20010002852Abstract: A local language is pre-stored in permanent memory. Equivalent data is transmitted in the vertical blanking interval (VBI) to television receivers. Each equivalent data set comprises a unique language identifier and a foreign language translation of, or graphical representative of, the local language pre-stored in permanent memory. The viewer selects the language to be displayed from an on screen menu with a remote controller. The selected equivalent data is retrieved from the VBI and stored in a RAM for future display. When the microprocessor calls up the text of a command for display, the equivalent data is substituted for the local language data so the foreign language version of the command can be displayed in a seamless manner. If no equivalent data is in the RAM, the local language pre-stored in permanent memory is displayed on the television screen in accordance with the normal operation of the microprocessor.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 1, 2000Publication date: June 7, 2001Applicant: Gemstar Development CorporationInventor: Daniel S. Patent number: 5852478Abstract: An embodiment of the present invention is a method for programming a controller for selection, from a plurality a set of infra red (IR) codes, set of IR codes for subsequent control of IR signal communication with a video cassette recorder (VCR). Each set of IR codes is for communicating with a different corresponding VCR. To this end, each such VCR has a tuner, which, when tuned to an actual channel of broadcast video signals, provides video signals derived from the actual channel to a video output thereof. A signal is provided to the VCR where the signal is predetermined by a selected IR code which is selected from one of the sets of IR codes. This causes the VCR to perform a predetermined operation. The video output of the VCR is monitored for a predetermined signal condition, such as a video signal being present, or for a label broadcast in the video signals. A set of IR codes is then selected for subsequent signal communication with the VCR.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1997Date of Patent: December 22, 1998Assignee: Gemstar Development CorporationInventor: Daniel S. Patent number: 5619383Abstract: A method and apparatus for recording and reading magnetic tape that contains audio signals and data that is related to the audio signals. In the preferred embodiment, the audio signals are music, and the related data are lyrics to the music displayed in real time to the music as it is being played. The lyrics are modulated onto an ultrasonic carrier signal and mixed with the audio signal on one track of the tape. The tape may be played on a conventional tape recorder without having interference from the recorded data at ultrasonic frequencies. In a suitably equipped tape player, the mixed signal is read and filtered to generate a high pass filtered signal and a bandpass filtered signal. The bandpass filtered signal filters out frequencies outside the range of human hearing to generate an audio signal. The high pass filtered signal is demodulated by the carrier frequency to reconstruct the lyrics.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 1995Date of Patent: April 8, 1997Assignee: Gemstar Development CorporationInventor: Hing Y.
