Abstract: A seed boot having a modular or replaceable opener removably fastened to the seed boot. The opener is configured in any of several embodiments for discharging a fluent material such as seed in different ways, including narrow single row, wide single row, and double row. A second fluent material such as fertilizer may be dispensed in an additional discharge stream in different embodiments. In some embodiments, two fluent materials may be mixed within the seed boot and dispensed together.

Abstract: A method of no-till fanning within soil. The method includes the steps of providing a darkened stubble; forming a furrow within the soil; and then introducing seed within the furrow whereby the darkened stubble absorbs energy radiation to warm the soil temperature. The darkened stubble is residues of cultivated crops, for example cereal grains. In one embodiment, the darkened stubble is darkened by application of a dark colored pigment. In yet additional alternate embodiments, the darkened stubble is darkened by genetically altering the color of the stubble or by selective plant breeding.

Abstract: A ground engaging tip for a seed boot attachment for depositing a seed within a furrow. The tip including a conical shape member formed of three generally planar shape side surfaces wherein two of the side surfaces meet to form an inclined leading edge extending from a tip of the conical shape member; and at least one wear resistant insert. The insert is secured to the leading edge of the ground engaging tip and includes a generally elongated bar having a leading end, a trailing end and three connecting side surfaces, a first side, second side and third side. The first, second and third side surfaces form a bar having a generally triangular cross-section, wherein the leading end of the bar is angled.

Abstract: A cultivator sweep secured to a sweep holder that is attached to a cultivator implement for shearing surface soil. The cultivator sweep includes a body member having a front nose portion, a rear portion and a pair of laterally outwardly extending wing members. The rear portion includes a slot. The sweep holder includes an insertion member and at least two flanges. The insertion member is received within the slot and the at least two flanges extend outwardly from the insertion member and define grooves to receive the body member. An interference fit is created between the body member of the cultivator sweep and the at least two flanges of the sweep holder to securely retain the cultivator sweep with respect to the sweep holder.
