  • Patent number: 5796214
Abstract: A ballast circuit for a gas discharge lamp comprises a resonant load circuit incorporating the gas discharge lamp and including a resonant inductance and a resonant capacitance. A d.c.-to-a.c. converter circuit induces an a.c. current in the resonant load circuit. The converter circuit comprises first and second switches serially connected between a bus conductor at a d.c. voltage and a reference conductor, and which are connected together at a common node through which the a.c. load current flows. The first and second switches each comprise a control node and a reference node, the voltage between such nodes determining the conduction state of the associated switch. The respective control nodes of the first and second switches are interconnected. The respective reference nodes of the first and second switches are connected together at the common node.

  • Patent number: 5345481
Abstract: A boiling-water reactor plant employs a baffle that parallels the interior surface of a thermally-conductive containment wall, defining an intermediate condensate channel. When the plant turbine becomes isolated from the boiling-water reactor, the reactor is shut down and steam is released from the reactor pressure vessel to the containment. Steam rises through an opening at the top of the baffle, allowing some of the steam to condense on the interior surface of the containment. Condensate then flows into the channel, which is dimensioned so that noncondensable gases are dragged into the channel along with the condensate. This minimizes thermal insulation due to the noncondensables and enhances the transfer of heat from the containment. Furthermore, the noncondensable gases are dragged at a sufficient velocity to induce turbulence. The resulting mixing of condensate flow layers further improves heat transfer to the containment wall.

  • Patent number: 5292138
Abstract: A split ring seal having an outer split ring and an inner split ring with the inner and outer split rings having overlapping portions. The split ring seal is located between a seating seal and a carrier and separates a high pressure cavity from a low pressure cavity. Movement of the split ring seal is restricted by sidewalls of the carrier. A diagonal edge on the outer ring reacts against centrifugal loading from the inner ring so that said outer ring is urged axially against a sidewall of the carrier to form a positive seal for blocking any leakage path between the high and low pressure cavities.
